July 7, 2015 - International League (IL1)
Toledo Mud Hens News Release
On a wet Tuesday night at Fifth Third Field, the Columbus Clippers (45-41) claimed a 4-2 decision over the Toledo Mud Hens, leaving them at 38-47 on the season. Toledo's International League West opponent's pitching core was able to keep the Hens at bay to pull of the victory.
Toledo's Bryan Holaday, who recently saw action up in Detroit, led the attack for hens with the help of Alexi Casilla. Holaday managed to rack up a pair of hits, going 2-for-4 in the box. Casilla not only tacked on one of the Hens' RBI and went 3-for-4, but made two diving catches at second base to keep Toledo in the game. Casilla was recently acquired from Tampa Bay, after tonight's matchup he's sitting with the highest batting average on the squad at .335.
The Clippers' starter and bullpen dictated the pace of the contest after retiring 10 Mud Hens batters. Toledo's Tim Melville started off strong throwing a hitless first four innings, it came to an end after an single from Erik Gonzalez to right field, snapping his streak. Drew Verhagen relieved Melville In the sixth, giving up three hits, while sending one batter back to the bench. Angel Nesbitt followed, recording two more strikeouts for the Hens. The three pitchers combined for seven scoreless innings.
The Hens' first run was posted in the fourth inning, thanks to Casilla's eleventh double of the season on a line drive to center bringing Holaday across home. An inning later, Detroit's top prospect, Steven Moya added on Toledo's second score after another double to right. The Hens slowly lost momentum in the innings that followed.
Toledo will be back in action at Fifth Third Field facing the righty Toru Murata (5-4, 2.91 ERA) and the Clippers. The right-hander Shane Greene (1-1, 3.47 ERA) is slated to make the 7:00 pm start.
