IL1 Buffalo Bisons

Offense Explodes in 15-1 Victory

July 7, 2015 - International League (IL1)
Buffalo Bisons News Release

Sean Ochinko picked up a team-high four hits and his second home run of the season in a blowout victory on Tuesday night.

The Bisons averaged less than three runs over Daniel Norris' 11 starts this season. Norris didn't encounter that problem for his 12th start on Tuesday night.

The Bisons defeated the Rochester Red Wings, 15-1, in one of the Herd's finest offensive performances of the season. Buffalo accumulated its second highest run total of the year and a season-high 21 hits, which overtook their previous record of 18, set on May 16 against Toledo.

The Herd led throughout the entirety of the game, but it took until the fifth inning for Buffalo to break the game open. The Bisons put up five runs on six hits during the frame en route to a commanding 8-0 lead. Buffalo's second offensive outburst came in the two innings later, when it put up four more runs to take a 12-1 lead.

Melky Mesa picked up one of his two doubles hits in the seventh inning - a bases-clearing hit to left field - and finished his day going 3-for-6 with two RBI. He reached base seven times in the past two games. Mesa picked up two more doubles and now has six in his last five games.

Mesa was one of five Bisons to accumulate three or more hits in the matchup, joining Matt Hague, Jonathan Diaz and Caleb Gindl. The offense was headlined by Sean Ochinko's four-hit display to go along with three RBI. He hit his second homerun of the season in the second inning to take an early 1-0 lead.

Hague added his fifth homer of the season in the third inning in part of his three-hit performance. The All-Star selection increased his batting average to .341.

Although it was one of the best offensive displays of the season for Buffalo, its pitching performances didn't disappoint either. Norris picked up his second victory of the season behind a dazzling seven-inning night. He struck out eight Red Wings and gave up one earned run.

Jeff Francis, who spent the majority of the season so far as a starter, was implemented out of the bullpen on Tuesday. He hurled two innings, and only gave up one hit in a scoreless outing.

The Herd will continue its three-game series against Rochester on Wednesday before heading home for a weekend series with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre before the All-Star break. Wednesday's matchup is set to begin at 7:05 p.m.

BISONS NOTES:

Luke Scott was the only Bison to not reach base, going 0-for-6 on the night ... Diaz added three hits, extending his hitting streak to seven games ... the Bisons hit multiple home runs for the second consecutive game
