RailRiders Grab Series Opener from Chiefs

Moosic, PA (July 7, 2015) - The Syracuse Chiefs dropped the first game of a three-game series to the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders, 5-1, Tuesday night at PNC Field. The RailRiders bullpen allowed just two hits in five innings of scoreless relief.

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (47-40) grabbed the lead in the first inning. Rob Refsnyder hit his seventh home run of the season off Chiefs starter Paolo Espino to take a 1-0 lead.

The RailRiders struck again in the second. Nick Noonan reached on a fielder's choice with two outs. Taylor Dugas then singled to put runners on the corners. Catcher Juan Graterol then singled to left field, scoring Noonan to extend the lead to 2-0. Dugas was thrown out at the plate trying to score after Graterol got caught in a rundown between first and second base to end the inning.

Syracuse (31-55) scored its lone run in the fourth. Ricky Hague walked with one out against RailRiders starter Luis Severino. Tony Gwynn, Jr. followed with a single. After a pop out, Caleb Ramsey hit a high-fly ball into shallow left-center field, which fell in between Dugas in left and Ben Gamel in center, allowing Hague to score and cut the lead to 2-1.

The RailRiders answered in the fifth. Noonan reached on an error on Kevin Keyes at first, followed by a Dugas single. After a strikeout, Ben Gamel singled in Noonan to push the lead to 3-1.

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre put the finishing touches on the game in the seventh. Noonan and Dugas each singled to start the inning. The RailRiders' seven and eight hitters in the game, Noonan and Dugas, combined to go 4 for 6 and scored four runs. Noonan scored on a double by Gamel to stretch the lead to 4-1. Paul Demny came out of the bullpen in relief of Espino, and after a walk, Cole Figueroa plated Dugas on a sacrifice fly to finish off the scoring at 5-1.

The Chiefs and RailRiders play game two of the three-game series Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. Taylor Hill is scheduled to start for Syracuse opposite Kyle Davies.
