Davidson Named to Triple-A All-Star Home Run Derby
July 7, 2015 - International League (IL1)
Charlotte Knights News Release
(UPTOWN CHARLOTTE, NC) - Charlotte third baseman Matt Davidson, who is tied for second in the International League in home runs with 13, has been selected to participate in the 2015 Triple-A All-Star Home Run Derby, presented by Omaha Public Power District (OPPD). The Home Run Derby will take place on Monday, July 13 at Werner Park in Omaha, Nebraska, at 7:35 p.m. CST, leading up to the 2015 Triple-A All-Star Game on Wednesday, July 15.
Davidson, 24, will participate in his second career Triple-A All-Star Home Run Derby. In 2013 -- as a member of the Reno Aces -- he won the Triple-A All-Star Home Run Derby at Aces Ballpark in Reno, NV. His 2013 title came just a day after he competed in the Futures Game at Citi Field in New York, where won the game's Most Valuable Player Award.
Last week, Davidson became one of four Charlotte Knights players named to the 2015 International League All-Star Team (Trayce Thompson, Zach Phillips, and Erik Johnson were the others). The Yucaipa, CA native is currently second in the IL in games played (84), tied for third in walks (42), tied for sixth in RBIs (45), and sixth in at-bats (307). Overall, Davidson is hitting .231 with 71 hits, 38 runs scored, 13 doubles, 13 home runs and 45 RBIs in 84 games for the Knights in 2015.
For his career, Davidson has hit 113 home runs over parts of seven minor league seasons. He has launched at least 20 home runs in each of his last four seasons and is on-pace to continue that feat this year. The 6'3", 230-pound third baseman was acquired from the Arizona Diamondbacks by the Chicago White Sox on December 16, 2013 in exchange for RHP Addison Reed. Davidson was originally drafted by the Diamondbacks in the first round (35th overall) of the 2009 First-Year Player Draft.
Davidson is the first Knights player since 2012 to participate in the Triple-A All-Star Game Home Run Derby. Slugger Dan Johnson competed in the 2012 edition in Buffalo, NY. Other Knights to take part in the Triple-A All-Star Game Home Run Derby over the years are: Jim Thome (1993), Russ Morman (1997), Joe Crede (2002), and Dayan Viciedo (2011).
The Knights return home to BB&T Ballpark tonight to open at three-game series against the Durham Bulls. Gates open at 6:00 p.m. and the ballpark will be "Peanut Free". Peanuts will not be sold at Tuesday's game to accommodate fans who suffer from peanut allergies. The first 3,000 fans through the gates will receive a Knights Jersey Cooler. Tuesday's game also marks another Twitter Tuesday, presented by BB&T, and fans can win prizes by following @KnightsBaseball on Twitter. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. from Uptown Charlotte.
On Wednesday, July 8, the Knights will pay tribute to the 30th anniversary of the iconic movie "Back to the Future" and fans will have a chance to have a photo taken with the DeLorean Time Machine. Gates once again open at 6:00 p.m. and first pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. on Wednesday. One night later, fans 21 and over can enjoy $3 domestic drafts on Thirsty Thursday courtesy of Hickory Tavern. Single-game tickets for all games this season are available by phone at 704-274-8282, in person at the BB&T Ballpark Ticket Office, or online at charlotteknights.com.
