Norfolk Tides News Release
Triple-A Baseball today announced the participants in the 2015 Triple-A All-Star Home Run Derby, and Norfolk's Dariel Alvarez is one of the six All-Star players who will take part in the contest. The home run derby, presented by Omaha Public Power District (OPPD), will take place on Monday, July 13 at Werner Park in Omaha, Nebraska at 7:35 pm CST, with the Triple-A All-Star Game taking place on Wednesday, July 15.
Alvarez, 26, has hit .272 with 12 home runs and 43 RBI in 82 games for Norfolk this season. The #5 prospect in the Orioles system according to Baseball America, Alvarez hit .340 with six home runs and 19 RBI in 26 June contests and is currently tied for the organizational lead in home runs this year. He's appeared in each of Norfolk's 82 games and he ranks among International League leaders in at-bats (1st, 324), total bases (T-3rd, 140), games (4th, 82), home runs (T-4th, 12) and hits (6th, 88). Alvarez was originally signed by Baltimore as a free agent on July 24, 2013.
Alvarez will be the first Norfolk player to appear in a home run derby since Craig Brazell in 2004. The Tides have had one Triple-A All-Star Home Run Derby champion, as Ryan Thompson won the event in Albuquerque, New Mexico, in 1993.
Norfolk opens a four-game, three-day homestand Friday, July 10 at Harbor Park with a 5:05 doubleheader against the Charlotte Knights. Individual game tickets, season tickets and group tickets are currently available.
