Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release
ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The RailRiders dropped a 6-2 decision to the Buffalo Bisons (Toronto Blue Jays) last night at PNC Field. The Bisons (42-43) won three of the four meetings to claim the series.
MILLER TIME: New York Yankees' closer Andrew Miller continued his comeback from a left forearm strain with a scoreless rehab appearance. The left-hander tossed the fifth inning, yielded two hits and struck out a batter. He delivered nine pitches, eight for strikes.
LONG & SHORT OF IT: Starter Jaron Long (5-6) was hit for four runs and seven hits over four innings in the loss. He walked three, threw a wild pitch and allowed a pair of home runs. In nine road outings (eight starts), he has gone 4-1 with a 2.42 ERA and just two home runs. In eight home starts, he owns a 1-5 record and a 7.68 ERA with five bombs. Opponents have hit nearly 100 points better against Long at PNC Field (.374) than they have on the road (.281).
LET'S GET SERIESOUS: The Bisons own a 5-4 lead in the season series against SWB. The road team has won every game but one. SWB swept the Bisons at Buffalo from June 8-10 and Buffalo has won five of six at PNC Field. The RailRiders must win five of the final eigh clashes between the clubs to post the franchise's first winning record against Buffalo since 2012.
ARE YOU TOO GOOD FOR YOUR HOME?!: With losses in six of seven at PNC Field, the RailRiders stand seven games below .500 at PNC Field (20-27) and 13 games over on the road (26-13). The team has hit .283 on the road compared to a .261 mark at home. On the road, SWB has scored 207 runs in 39 games (5.3/game). At home, the squad has plated 171 runs in 47 games (3.6/game). The pitching has performed worse on the road (3.67 ERA) than at home (3.48 ERA). No IL team has a better road winning percentage than the RailRiders (.667), who have won 19 of 25 away from Moosic.
KNOW YOUR COLE: Cole Figueroa posted multiple hits for the 12th time in 14 games and for the 10th game in a row. He went 2-for-4 and lifted his batting average to a season-best .320, good for second in the league. His average sat at .184 after an 0-for-3 day at Norfolk on May 11. Since then, he has hit .393/.439/.530/.969 over 47 games played. In that time he ranks among the IL's best in AVG (1st), OBP (1st), SLG (3rd) and OPS (2nd). During his 10-game hitting streak, which trails only the Xavier Avery's 12-gamer with Toledo for the longest active streak in the IL, Figueroa has hit .548 (23-for-43) for the minors' fourth best average in that time.
SECOND (BASE) LIFE: Since his 0-for-4 showing against Louisville on June 23 dropped his average to .268, the worst it had been since late April, second baseman Rob Refsnyder has gone 14-for-37 in 12 games for slashes of .378/.556/.514/1.069. His 14 walks in that time are tied for the most in all of minor league baseball. His season-long .379 OBP ranks fourth in the IL. His error total has also dropped dramatically month by month: April (7E in 20GP), May (4E in 24GP), June (2E in 27GP), July (0E in 7GP).
OFF THE RAILS: Greg Bird boomed a double in the fourth inning for his first Triple-A extra-base hit...He has hit safely in three straight games after settling for a walk in an 0-for-3 debut at the level on the Fourth of July...Kyle Roller hit seventh for the first time this season, the lowest he has hit as an SWB starter in 2015...The All-Star first baseman/DH leads the team in homers (12), RBIs (47) and walks (43), but finds himself in an 8-for-45 (.178) funk of his last dozen games played with 14 strikeouts and just one extra-base hit (.200 SLG)...Roller will not be among the IL's three participants in the 2015 Triple-A All-Star Home Run Derby on Monday, July 13 at Omaha's Wener Park, but two former Yankees' minor leaguers will participate for the PCL in Tacoma's Jesus Montero, an SWB alumnus, and Reno's Peter O'Brien.
