Lehigh Valley IronPigs News Release
Syracuse, N.Y. - The Lehigh Valley IronPigs (27-35) launched three homers but the Syracuse Mets (39-24) pulled away late with six unanswered runs to take the series opener between the two clubs by a final of 8-3 on Tuesday night at NBT Bank Stadium.
Syracuse got started early in the first inning. Ben Gamel walked to lead off and after a popup, Brett Batt launched a two-run homer to rightfield, his third of the season.
The IronPigs tied the game in the fourth inning as Simon Muzziotti and Aramis Garcia hit back-to-back jacks, both solo shots and for both their fourth of the season.
In the fifth, Ruben Cardenas hit his third homer in as many games since joining the IronPigs, a solo bomb to put Lehigh Valley ahead 3-2.
From there it was all Syracuse as they scored six unanswered runs. Hayden Senger drew a bases loaded walk to tie the game in the sixth. Later in the frame with the bases still loaded and now two outs, Rylan Bannon lined a single to leftfield to score two runs putting Syracuse ahead. Baty followed with another RBI single, making it 6-3 Syracuse.
Senger firmly pulled the Mets clear with a two-run homer in the seventh, his third of the season.
Matt Festa (1-0) earned the win in relief for the Mets, working 1.1 no-hit innings, allowing two walks and striking out one.
Zac Houston (2-1) suffered his first loss of the season for the IronPigs, allowing four runs in one-third of an inning on three walks and a hit batter, striking out one.
Michael Mercado started for the IronPigs but didn't factor into the decision. Mercado conceded just two runs in five innings, striking out four while allowing four hits and two walks.
The 'Pigs and Mets continue their series on Wednesday, June 12 with first pitch slated for 11:05 a.m. at NBT Bank Stadium. Ricardo Pinto (1-1, 4.63) is slated to go for the IronPigs while Syracuse hands he ball to Christian Scott (3-0, 2.97)
