Stripers Erupt Late to Put Away Nashville 13-9 in High-Scoring Bout

June 11, 2024 - International League (IL)
Gwinnett Stripers News Release

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - Contributions from up and down the lineup helped the Gwinnett Stripers (30-34) overcome an early 3-0 deficit and find an offensive groove late as they used a five-run sixth inning and a four-run eighth inning to topple the Nashville Sounds (34-30) in an offensive exhibition on Tuesday night at Coolray Field.

Decisive Plays: Nashville broke out to a 3-0 lead on a three-run home run by Wes Clarke in the first inning. Chadwick Tromp plated a pair with a single in the third inning to make it 3-2, and Sandy Leon tied the game at 3-3 on an RBI single in the fourth. With Nashville in front 5-4 entering the bottom of the sixth, the Stripers got a two-run double from Skye Bolt and another two-run single from Tromp as part of a five-run sixth to lead 8-4. The Sounds made that a short-lived advantage with a four-run seventh inning to tie the game, but Gwinnett broke the tie on Luke Waddell's RBI double in the seventh and scored four more times in the eighth inning - two runs coming on a homer by Ramon Laureano (3) - to take a decisive 13-8 lead.

Key Contributors: Tromp had a game-high four RBIs while Bolt, Leon, Laureano and Waddell each had multi-RBI nights. Andrew Velazquez also tallied a game-high three hits. Nashville got a three-run home run from Clarke, and a strong performance by Tyler Black (2-for-5, 2 doubles, 2 RBIs) at the plate.

Noteworthy: Gwinnett starter Grant Holmes tied a career-high with nine strikeouts over 4.2 innings. Velazquez extended his team-best hitting streak to 13 games while Luke Williams collected a hit to build his own hitting streak to 10 games. Yuli Gurriel saw his 24-game on-base streak snapped after going 0-for-5. Gwinnett has scored 10 or more runs in its last three victories.

Next Game (Wednesday, June 12): Gwinnett vs. Nashville, 12:05 p.m. ET at Coolray Field. Broadcast: 11:50 a.m. ET on MyCountry993.com. RHP Allan Winans (3-3, 3.86 ERA), the reigning International League Pitcher of the Week, starts for the Stripers opposite RHP Taylor Clarke (1-0, 2.95 ERA) for the Sounds. It's Summer Splash Down at Coolray Field, as the Stripers invite area youth camps for a special matinee game.
