I-Cubs Drop Series Opener to Clippers
June 11, 2024 - International League (IL)
Iowa Cubs News Release
COLUMBUS, OH - The Iowa Cubs (29-35) dropped their series opening contest against the Columbus Clippers (26-37) by a score of 3-2 on Tuesday night from Huntington Park.
It was a pitchers duel in the early stages of the game as the two ballclubs held each other scoreless and combined for just three hits through the first four innings.
The scoring finally started in the fifth inning with Iowa taking the lead. Utility man Bryce Windham connected on splitter and took it the opposite way for a solo shot that just cleared the top of the left field wall, which put the I-Cubs ahead 1-0.
Columbus immediately countered in the bottom of the fifth, however, and jumped out in front at 2-1. With runners on second and third, Jose Tena poked a base hit through the right side for a two-RBI single. The Clippers then added another run in the sixth off a bases loaded walk which increased their lead to 3-1.
In the seventh, the I-Cubs cut the deficit to one run with another solo home run. This solo blast came courtesy of Alexander Canario and made the score 3-2.
Iowa was able to get a runner in scoring position with the score still at 3-2 after Miles Mastrobuoni doubled in the ninth, but the game ended on an Owen Caissie groundout.
