State College Spikes News Release

STATE COLLEGE, PA - Juan Perez matched the State College Spikes' single-game strikeout record with 10 whiffs on the night, while Cole Lankford tied the club's single-game doubles records as the Spikes shut out the Batavia Muckdogs for an 8-0 win on Saturday night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.

Perez (3-1) went a season-long seven innings, allowing just two hits and two walks in a dominant performance. The right-hander matched the franchise record set by Will Anderson on June 29 of last year against Williamsport and tied by Fernando Baez in a playoff game against Hudson Valley on September 5, 2014.

The Spikes' (14-13) strong pitching effort was bolstered by an equally powerful offensive display led by Lankford's trio of two-base hits. The Texas A&M product also collected five runs batted in, one shy of the team record, while becoming the fifth State College player with three doubles in a game, and the first since Walker Gourley on September 5, 2012 against Mahoning Valley.

Orlando Olivera also added some punch to the State College attack, notching his third consecutive multi-hit game and smashing his first home run for the club. Olivera led off the Spikes' half of the fourth inning with the long ball to left field, stopping the team's streak of ten consecutive games without hitting the ball out of the park.

Casey Grayson drove in the first State College run with an RBI single as part of the Spikes' three-run first. Jesse Jenner also contributed a run-scoring double in the fourth to the offensive output.

Jacob Evans finished the shutout for the Spikes as he allowed just one walk over two innings of work.

Batavia (8-19) starter Brett Lilek (0-2) took the loss after yielding five runs on seven hits while striking out three over 3 1/3 innings of work.

Former Spikes pitcher Ryan Hafner, who hurled for State College in 2011 and 2012, finished the game for the Muckdogs with a scoreless, one-hit eighth inning.

The Spikes and Muckdogs meet again on Sunday evening at 6:05 p.m. for the middle game of their three-game set at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. State College will send right-hander Landon Beck (1-2) to the mound, while Batavia will counter with right-hander Cody Poteet (0-1).
