Extra Outs Doom Spinners in Loss, 3-1

Lowell Spinners News Release

LOWELL, MASS. - For the second time in 10 days a third strike that would have been the third out eluded Lowell Spinners catcher Jhon Nunez, ultimately resulting in a run for the opponent. Saturday night the Staten Island Yankees capitalized on the opportunity, using the extra out to plate a seventh inning run on their way to handing the Spinners a 3-1 defeat at Richmond County Bank Ballpark.

Lowell (16-12) had a chance to break the game open in the fourth inning. After back-to-back singles by Andrew Benintendi and Tucker Tubbs led off the inning, both advanced to scoring position on a passed ball before Austin Rei walked to load the bases. A Hector Lorenzana groundout would plate Benintendi, but Tubbs was thrown out at home one batter later on a comebacker to the mound. Jordon Austin grounded out to end the inning with the Spinners ahead, 1-0.

Staten Island (16-11) pulled even in the bottom of the fourth on a two-out solo home run by Zack Zehner.

The score remained there until the seventh inning. After a leadoff walk by Zehner, Randy Perez appeared set to get out of the inning, striking out Jeff Hendrix swinging for what should have been the innings third out. Nunez however could not keep the ball in front of him, allowing Hendrix to reach to extend the inning. A single to the hole and throwing error on Lorenzana followed, giving the Yankees a 2-1 lead.

The Yankees would go on to add an insurance run in the eighth for what would hold as a 3-1 final.

Luis Ramos pitched very well through five innings, allowing just the one run on the Zehner home run, striking out five. Perez was the tough luck loser, while Trevor Kelley made his Spinners debut after arriving from Fort Myers prior to the game.

The two teams will continue the three-game set Sunday when Jake Cosart (1-2, 7.88) gets the ball for a 4pm first pitch.
