Tri-City ValleyCats News Release
TROY, NY - Bryan Muñiz went 2-for-3 with a home run and two runs batted in, while Kolbey Carpenter went 1-for-3 with a home run and three runs batted in, as the Tri-City ValleyCats topped the Aberdeen IronBirds 7-4 in front of 5,263 fans at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium, on Saturday night.
Muñiz got the 'Cats scoring started in the bottom of the first inning, driving home Edwin Medina with an RBI single to right field. In his next at bat, the Hialeah, Fla., native led off the bottom of the fourth by driving a 1-1 pitch from Aberdeen left-hander Reid Love over the left field wall for his second home run of the year, putting Tri-City ahead 2-0.
Four batters later, with two outs and Bobby Wernes on second base, Carpenter came up and lined the first pitch he saw from Love over the left field wall for his first professional home run, increasing the 'Cats lead to 4-0.
The IronBirds got in the scoring column by pushing three runs across in the top of the fifth. However, with a 3-2 count and the bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth, Wernes hit a two-run single to right field, making the score 6-3 in favor of Tri-City.
Aberdeen did manage to add another run in the top of the eighth, but the ValleyCats responded once more when Carpenter drove home Wernes in the bottom of the eighth, extending Tri-City's lead back to three runs.
Right-handed reliever Zac Grotz pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning to close out the victory, giving him his first save as a member of the ValleyCats.
Earning the win for Tri-City was right-hander Dean Deetz (4-1), who struck out two batters while allowing only two hits in frames.
Other than Muñiz, Medina (3-for-4 with two runs, a double and three stolen bases) and Wernes (2-for-4 with two runs and two runs batted in) also posted multi-hit games for the 'Cats.
With the victory, the ValleyCats have won three of the four games played thus far in this six-game homestand, and have won five of their last seven games overall. They will look to stay on the winning track in game two of this three-game set, which will take place on Friday, at 6:00 p.m. On the mound for Tri-City will be LHP Alex Winkelman (0-0, 5.40), with RHP Zach Albin (0-3, 4.26) getting the start for Aberdeen.
The game, which will be broadcasted nationally on television as a part of Minor League Baseball's Sunday Showcase on the American Sports Network, will be distributed coast-to-coast across many of Sinclair Broadcasting Group's 150+ local affiliate stations, and leading regional sports networks including MSG Networks Plus, Cox Sports, Comcast SportsNet, and Altitude Sports. It will be the first time in franchise history that the Tri-City ValleyCats will host a nationally televised game. Locally, the game will be broadcasted on CW15.
