Doubledays Beat Scrappers 6-3 In Rain Shortened 7-Inning Game

NILES, OH - The game only lasted seven innings due to rain, but it didn't matter as the Doubledays beat the Scrappers 6-3 and took the series 2-1.

The Doubledays struck first in the first inning. With one out, Dalton Dulin singled into right field. The speedy infielder baseman then stole second. Andrew Stevenson stepped up next and flew out to center field. Rhett Wiseman was the next hitter after Stevenson and launched a two-run homer over the right field fence for his second professional homer to give the Doubledays a 2-0 lead.

In the bottom of the first, the Scrappers responded. Willi Castro led off the frame with a single into center off Taylor Guilbeau. After Jodd Carter struck out, Castro stole second before he moved over to third on a single into left by Mark Mathias. Castro then scored with two outs when Li-Jen Chu singled into center. The run by the Scrappers put the score at 2-1.

After a scoreless second and top of the third, the Scrappers tied it up at two in the bottom of the third. Castro notched his second single of the night into center, but then advanced all the way to third after Rafael Bautista committed an error in center. Castro later scored when Carter hit a hard grounder to third that was misplayed by Melvin Rodriguez.

An inning later in the fourth, the Scrappers took a 3-2 lead. Emmanuel Tapia led off with a single into right and moved to third when Connor Marabell reached on an error by the second baseman Dalton Dulin.Tapia then came around to score on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Silento Sayles. The inning ended a batter later when Castro singled into right and Marabell was thrown out at home by Wiseman trying to score from second.

The Doubledays weren't down for long as they tied it up at three in the fifth. Bautista singled on a bunt down the third base line. The outfielder then stole second and was pushed over to third when Dulin grounded out to second. Andrew Stevenson then extended his hit-streak to 13 with an RBI single into left that scored Bautista from third.

After a scoreless sixth, the Doubledays added three in the seventh. Edwin Lora and Bautista both grounded out to start the frame before Dulin was hit by a pitch. Dulin then stole second and came around to score on a single by Max Schrock who advanced to second on the throw to give Auburn a 4-3 lead. Wiseman brought in Schrock with a single to center and advanced to second on the throw home as well to give the Doubledays a 5-3 lead. Ian Sagdal then added to the lead with a double into left that scored Wiseman from second and the Doubledays took a 6-3 lead.

After a 1-2-3 bottom of the seventh, the umpires started a rain delay as thunder and rain rolled into Niles, Ohio. After 40 minutes, the game was called and the Doubledays were awarded the victory.

Adam Boghosian earned the victory after two scoreless innings. His final line was 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, and 1 K. Jordan Carter took the loss after he gave up three runs on three hits in the seventh. His final line was 1 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, and 1 K.

The Doubledays return home Saturday and host the West Virginia Black Bears for a single-admission double header. Erick Fedde and Matt Crownover start games one and two respectively for Auburn with game one starting at 5:05 PM and game two scheduled to begin approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first.
