West Virginia Black Bears News Release
The West Virginia Black Bears defeated the State College Spikes 7-3 on Friday night at Monongalia County Ballpark. SP Dario Agrazal had his best start of the season in a 6.0 inning, seven strikeout performance to propel West Virginia to the victory. With the win, West Virginia improves to 11-15 on the season while the Spikes fall to 13-13 with the loss.
State College took the early advantage on an RBI single from RJ Dennard in the second inning to take a 1-0 lead. The Black Bears took back the lead in the third inning in exciting fashion when SS Kevin Newman blasted a no-doubt two-run shot to left field over the visitor bullpen scoring 2B Kevin Kramer who led the inning off with a single to left field.
The West Virginia offense kept rolling in the fourth inning when DH Maximo Rivera singled to right field and then stole second. C Christian Kelley then proceeded with a single to center scoring Rivera to extend the lead to 3-2. Later in the inning, LF Ty Moore ripped a single up the middle, scoring both Newman and Kelley to take a 5-2 advantage. State College scored a run in the seventh but West Virginia got the run right back in the bottom half on an RBI single from Rivera. The Spikes scored a run in the ninth but it wasn't enough as the Black Bears hung on to claim the 7-3 victory.
Agrazal was awarded the win (3-1) in his 6.0 inning performance where he allowed only one run. Pitchers Eric Dorsch and Julio Eusebio combined to toss 3.0 innings, allowing two runs and scattering three hits. Newman and Moore each had a pair of RBI in the game and the Black Bears had six hitters with at least two hits.
The Black Bears will now begin a four-game series on the road against the Auburn Doubledays which includes a doubleheader on Saturday, July 18 beginning at 5:05 p.m. in which the teams will make up the game from 6/27 that got postponed due to rain. LHP Cesilio Pimentel will start Game One while RHP Luis Paula will take the mound for Game Two.
