Auburn Doubledays News Release
AUBURN, NY - To make up for a postponed game on June 27th, the Doubledays and Black Bears played a doubleheader on July 18th and split the two games.
GAME ONE:
The Doubledays took game one by a score of 6-4, and all six of those runs came in the very first inning.
Rafael Bautista led off with a double to left before Edwin Lora grounded out to the mound. Rhett Wiseman dug in next and drove in Bautista with a double to right. Wiseman then scored on an RBI single from Kelvin Gutierrez. Then things got tricky. David Kerian hit a bouncer to third, but Gutierrez was safe at second and Kerian at first on an error by the third baseman Mitchell Tolman. Randy Encarnacion and Erik VanMeetren were the next two hitters and both walked. Jorge Tillero and Jake Jefferies were the final 'Days hitters to record a hit as they both notched RBI singles to put the score at 6-0. Bautista then struck out looking and Lora grounded into a fielder's choice to end the six-run five-hit first inning.
In the second, the Black Bears responded. With two outs, Daniel Arribas singled into right. Casey Hughston stepped in next and drove in Arribas with a double into right. The double off the bat of Hughston ended a streak of 22.2 innings that Doubledays pitchers went without giving up an extra base hit.
The Black Bears were down 6-1 heading into the third, but struck for two more. The Bears led off with back-to-back-to-back singles to put the score at 6-2. The final run of the inning came around to score later on an RBI single by Christian Kelly and the score became 6-3.
After a scoreless fourth, fifth, and sixth, West Virginia went to the plate for the final time in the seventh. Tolman led off with a double into right, and later scored on a groundout to third by Kevin Newman. Logan Hill then flew out to right to end the game.
Erick Fedde started game one for the Doubledays and his line was 5 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, and 7 K's. Cesilio Pimentel was the starter for the Black Bears and didn't do as well. His line was 0.1 IP, 3 H, 6 R, 5 ER, 2 BB, and 0 K's.
GAME TWO:
The second game lasted just a quick 1:46 as the Black Bears beat the Doubledays 3-1.
The first two innings breezed by before West Virginia struck first in the third. Erik Forgione led off with a bunt single to first. Forgione then came around to score the first run of the day on an RBI single from Logan Hill. Ty Moore stepped up next and drove in Hill with a double to right and the Black Bears took a 2-0 lead.
The fourth and fifth went by quickly before both teams scored in the sixth. Moore led off the top of the sixth with a single into right and was brought in thanks to an RBI single from Maximo Rivera to give West Virginia a 3-0 lead. In the bottom of the sixth, the Doubledays responded. Rhett Wiseman hit an infield single and then scored on a triple by David Kerian to knock Juan Paula, the Black Bears starter out of the game.
Sean Keselica replaced Paula on the mound with two outs in the sixth, and then ended up recorded the final four outs of the game all by strike out, while also giving up a double to Melvin Rodriguez.
Paula pitched very well in his first start for the Black Bears as his line was 5.2 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, and 5 K's while throwing just 59 pitches, 43 of which were for strikes. Matt Crownover started for the Doubledays and his line was 5 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, and 4 K's as he took the loss.
