Brooklyn Cyclones News Release
BROOKLYN, NY - July 18, 2015 - The Cyclones continued their recent struggles on Saturday night and dropped their fourth home game in a row with a 4-3 loss to open up a three game set with the Vermont Lake Monsters. One rough inning for Brooklyn starter Tyler Badamo was all Vermont needed to stay in front for the duration of the game despite a valiant comeback attempt by the hometown Boys of Summer.
Badamo was sharp through the first two innings but ran into trouble in the top of the third when Vermont loaded the bases with two outs. Third baseman and No. 3 hitter Mikey White then cleared the bases with a three-run double into the left field corner, giving the Lake Monsters a 3-0 lead.
However, Brooklyn had an answer during their half of the inning. Alfredo Reyes led off with a double but ended up at third after an error on the left fielder. Emmanuel Zabala followed with an RBI single into center field, cutting the Vermont lead to 3-1. Lake Monster starting pitcher Jon Massad was efficient through five innings, allowing just one run on five hits while striking out seven Cyclone hitters and collecting the win.
The Lake Monsters would strike again in the sixth after a throwing error by third baseman David Thompson to lead off the inning. A one out walk put runners at first and second before Badamo was taken out of the game. LHP Ruben Reyes entered and gave up a single but Vermont base runner Chris Iriart halted at third on the hard-hit ball. A wild throw home from Zabala went all the way to the backstop and allowed Iriart to cross home plate, making it a 4-1 game.
The Cyclones would answer in the bottom of the sixth, beginning with a Michael Bernal single off new Vermont pitcher Corey Miller. Brandon Brosher was then hit by a pitch with one out. After a single by Jeff Diehl loaded the bases, new-to-Brooklyn Hengelbert Rojas singled in Bernal to make it a 4-2 Vermont lead. It looked as though Brooklyn was on the cusp of putting up a crooked number before Pedro Perez hit a line drive to Vermont shortstop Richie Martin, who then doubled Diehl off second base to end the threat.
RHP Johnny Magliozzi then made his first appearance since returning to the Cyclones and did so in dominating fashion, throwing two perfect innings in the seventh and eighth.
The bottom of the eighth saw Brooklyn continue the comeback, beginning with Bernal's sixth double of the season to lead off. He moved to third on a groundout from Thompson and came home on a wild pitch by Corey Miller, slicing the Vermont lead to 4-3. Jeff Diehl drew a two out walk before a Vermont pitching change. Rojas was the first batter to face new pitcher James Naile and ripped a single into center field, leaving runners on the corners with two down. The threat would end when Naile struck out Perez to escape the jam.
LHP Carlos Valdez threw a scoreless ninth before the Cyclones' last gasp, which came in the ninth when Vinny Siena singled up the middle with two outs. Bernal, bidding for his third hit of the game, grounded out to first base to give Naile a four-out save and the Lake Monsters a 4-3 win as Badamo takes the loss for the Cyclones. Brooklyn has lost five of six overall and is seeing their McNamara division lead shrink each day.
The Cyclones look to rebound on Sunday when RHP Gaby Almonte (2-2, 3.07) takes the hill for the second of a three game series with Vermont. It is the Impractical Jokers Takeover presented by Tru TV with Sal, Joe, Murr and Q joining the fun at MCU Park. The first 2,500 fans will receive an Impractical Jokers bobbleheads and first pitch is scheduled for 5:00PM. Tickets are still available and can be purchased by calling 718-507-TIXX, logging on to BrooklynCyclones.com or in person at the MCU Park Box Office.
