Vermont Lake Monsters News Release

BROOKLYN, NY --- Mikey White had a three-run double and Jonnie Massad tossed five strong innings to lead the Vermont Lake Monsters to a 4-3 victory over the Brooklyn Cyclones in the opener of a New York-Penn League three-game series Saturday night at MCU Park.

With two outs and the bases empty in the third inning, the Lake Monsters loaded the bases on three straight singles from Jesus Lopez, Steven Pallares and Richie Martin. Then on an 0-1 pitch, White lined the three-run double to leftfield to give Vermont a 3-0 lead. The double was the only hit of the night for White, but extended his hitting streak to 15 straight games (tied for sixth longest in Lake Monsters history).

Massad retired the first five batters he faced, three by strikeout, before allowing a walk and hitting a batter in the second. The Cyclones got the only run and two hits in the third inning they would get off Massad, who allowed a Alfredo Reyes leadoff double and Enmanuel Zabala RBI single. But after the RBI single Massad (2-2) retired nine of the final 10 batters he faced, finishing his outing with one run two hits with two walks and a career-high seven strikeouts over five innings to earn the win.

Vermont took a 4-1 lead in the top of the sixth with an unearned run scoring on a Nick Collins RBI single. Reliever Corey Miller replaced Massad to start the bottom of the sixth, allowing a run on three hits and a hit batter in the inning. The Lake Monsters led 4-2 with the bases loaded and one out for Brooklyn, but Miller got Pedro Perez to line into an inning-ending double play.

The Cyclones got another run in the eighth on a wild pitch and runners on the corners with one out before James Naile struckout Perez to end the inning and keep the Vermont lead at 4-3. Naile allowed a two-out single in the ninth, but got Michael Bernal on a grounder to first base to end the game and collect his third save of the season.

Collins was 2-for-3 with a walk and the RBI single for Vermont (12-15), which has won two of the first four games on the six-game roadtrip and six of its last 10 games overall. Bernal, Jeff Diehl and Hengelbert Rojas each had two hits for Brooklyn (16-11), while Tyler Badamo (1-3) was charged with four runs (three earned) on five hits over 5 1/3 innings to take the loss.

The win was just the third in Vermont's last 10 games played at Brooklyn. The Lake Monsters and Cyclones will play the second of the three-game series at MCU Park on Sunday at 5:00 pm followed by an 11:30 morning game on Monday in the roadtrip finale. Vermont returns to historic Centennial Field to begin a six-game homestand on Tuesday against Auburn.
