Staten Island Yankees News Release

The Staten Island Yankees (16-11) and Lowell Spinners (16-12) kicked off their three-game series with solid pitching performances as the Yankees claimed the victory, 3-1.

Staten Island starter Derek Callahan went six strong innings, giving up only one run on three hits, striking out five batters. Newly added lefty Josh Rogers (W, 1-0) made his debut, earning his first professional win with two scoreless innings, striking out three Spinners. James Reeves (SV, 1) earned his first save as a Baby Bomber, tossing a scoreless ninth inning.

Lowell got their lone run in the top of the fourth inning. Red Sox 2015 first round pick Andrew Benintendi singled to right field, followed by a Tucker Tubbs single to center center. Austin Rei drew a walk from Callahan to load the bases, then Callahan induced a ground ball double play to shortstop, allowing Benintendi to cross the plate.

The Baby Bombers struck right back in the bottom half of the inning as Zack Zehner smashed the first home run of his professional career, with a solo shot to left field to tie the game.

With a tied game in the bottom of the seventh inning, Ryan Krill reached first on a fielder's choice, then advanced to scoring position on a passed ball by Lowell catcher Jhon Nunez. Kyle Holder put the Baby Bombers on top for good as he singled to shortstop Hector Lorenzana. Lorenzana made a throwing error on the play, allowing Krill to score the go-ahead run.

Staten Island added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth inning. Jhalan Jackson walked, then advanced to second as Jake Hernandez was hit by a pitch. Krill sent Jackson across the plate with an RBI single to left field to give the Baby Bombers a 3-1 victory.

The two teams return to action at Richmond County Bank Ballpark Sunday at 4 p.m.
