Norwich Sea Unicorns News Release
NORWICH, CT-The Connecticut Tigers (12-15) dropped the opening game of a three game series with the Hudson Valley Renegades (15-12) by a score of 6-4 in ten innings.
The Tigers after snapping a two game losing streak last night at Lowell have now lost seven of their last ten games. Hudson Valley has won three games in a row.
Hudson Valley took a 2-0 lead against Tigers starter Josh Heddinger (0-1) with single runs in the second and third innings. Heddinger was making his first start this season with Connecticut after starting the year with West Michigan. He lasted just two and two third innings and allowed two runs on two hits.
Connecticut would be able to tie the game at 2-2. With two outs in the fifth the Tigers got back-to-back triples from shortstop Steven Fuentes and designated hitter Cam Gibson to make it 2-1. Catcher Franklin Navarro (2-4, 2 RBI) then tied it the following inning with an RBI single.
The game remained tied until the top of eighth. With Jack Fischer on the mound for Connecticut the lead off man, leftfielder Jake Cronenworth reached with a single and scored two batters later on a double from first basemen Matt Dacey (2-5, 2 R, RBI). With two outs right fielder Manny Sanchez (2-4, R, RBI) drove in another run to make it 4-2 Renegades.
Connecticut answered back in the bottom half of the inning. Reece Karalus (1-0) entered the game and promptly allowed the first batters to reach. Catcher Will Allen (1-5, 2 R) singled and right fielder Tanner Donnels reached on an error. After a sacrifice bunt both Navarro and leftfielder Victor Padron (2-5, RBI) came through with RBI hits tying the game at 4-4.
Neither team scored in the ninth so the game went to the tenth inning. Jordan Smith (0-1) was now on the bump for Connecticut and he allowed two runs to score. Hudson Valley loaded the bases with one out and they took the lead on a sacrifice fly from third basemen Alex Schmidt and a single by Angel Moreno.
The Tigers had the tying runs on base in the bottom of the tenth but Karalus was able to get the final out of the game.
Connecticut will play Hudson Valley tomorrow at home in the middle game of the three game series. The first pitch on Sunday is scheduled for 4:05 p.m.
