Scrappers Take Series Opener against Williamsport
July 18, 2015 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
Williamsport Crosscutters News Release
The Williamsport Crosscutters dropped the first game of a three game series against the Mahoning Valley Scrappers on Saturday night. The Scrappers defeated the Cutters for the second time this season and handed the Cutters just their third home loss by a score of 4-1. The Cutters drop to 20-8 overall on the season.
The Cutters would struggle to put any offense together against Mahoning Valley starter Kieran Lovegrove. Lovegrove avenged a loss to Williamsport earlier in the season by stringing together 5 1/3 innings of one run baseball. Tyler Gilbert would not have the same luck as Lovegrove, surrendering three runs on three hits in the top of the first inning. The runs were the first of the season surrendered by Gilbert and the Scrappers would add one more against him in the top of the third inning taking a 4-0 lead.
Williamsport would break up the Scrappers shutout bid in the bottom of the sixth inning as Gregori Rivero drove in Jose Pujols with an RBI single to make it a 4-1 game. The bullpens for both teams would shut things down the rest of the way as no more runs would come around to score. The Scrappers did have their chances as they left the bases loaded twice in the game.
The Cutters did their best to rally in the ninth inning getting runners to second and third. With two outs Mark Laird represented the tying run at the plate for Williamsport but would send a grounder back to the mound as Devon Stewart fielded it to first base for the final out and his second save of the season. Gilbert suffered his first loss of the season falling to 0-1 while seeing his ERA rise to 2.84.
