Penguins Lupaschuk Scores, Surovy Gets Assist in All-Star Game

PORTLAND, Maine (Monday, February 3, 2003) - Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins defenseman Ross Lupaschuk scored one goal as the Canadian All-Star team defeated Tomas Surovy and the PlanetUSA All-Star team, 10-7, at the 2003 Dodge AHL All-Star Classic in Portland, Maine.

The 21-year old Lupaschuk, who replaced Norfolk's Steve McCarthy on the Canadian All-Star roster last week, took a pass from Darren Haydar in the slot and beat goaltender Phil Sauve at 7:59 of the first period.

Lupaschuk has played in 45 games this season with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, recording 28 points (15+13) and 44 penalty minutes. He ranks second among AHL defensemen in goals and is sixth on the team in scoring.

The 6'1", 218-pound native of Edmonton, Alberta was recalled by Pittsburgh from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton on December 9th and made his NHL debut against the Toronto Maple Leafs on December 10. He played in three games for the Penguins, going scoreless with four penalty minutes. He was reassigned to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton on Dec. 19.

Lupaschuk was acquired by the Penguins with Kris Beech and Michal Sivek from Washington in exchange for Jaromir Jagr and Frantisek Kucera on July 11, 2001. He was drafted by the Capitals in the second round (34th overall) of the 1999 NHL Entry Draft.

Surovy, who replaced Milan Kraft on the Planet USA All-Star roster, recorded an assist on Jeff Taffe's goal at 4:19 of the opening period.

The 6'1", 204-pound native of Banska Bystrica, Slovakia is third on the team in scoring with 34 points (16+18). He leads the team in goals and is tied for first with three game-winning goals.

The Penguins (22-22-3-3, 50 points; Fourth-Place, South Division) return to action on Wednesday as they host the Philadelphia Phantoms (20-22-2-3, 45 points; Third-Place, South Division) at 7:05 p.m. at the First Union Arena at Casey Plaza.

There are approximately 156 tickets are still available for the game. The Penguins have sold out their last 84 home games (league-record) played in Wilkes-Barre.
