Saint John Flames News Release
Saint John, NB â The New Brunswick Community College Saint John and the Saint John Flames Hockey Club today announced the launch of the Write Your Face Off Program to promote children's literacy in Southern New Brunswick.
Write Your Face Off is an essay-writing program designed to encourage children to write, be creative and put some thought towards future careers. The Program targets sixth, seventh and eighth grade classrooms in 21 schools in Districts 6 & 8 and will reach over 5,000 children.
"Writing is one of the most important tools for a child's successful education and future," stated program ambassador, Flames defenceman Rick Mrozik. "Along with the rest of my teammates, we the players are glad to help promote the importance of writing to local youth and to pass along the message that, above all else, working towards a successful education is important.
The Write Your Face Off Program will run for the month of February, during which time students will be encouraged to write a five-paragraph essay on "What is my dream career?" Specifically, students will write an essay on what careers they want and what they want to accomplish. Once completed, each participating classroom will choose one essay to represent their class and to compete for one of two grand prizes â a Student and Parent Road Trip to Portland with the Flames and a Classroom field trip to NBCC Saint John.
"We are delighted to be part of the Write Your Face Off program, which combines the love of sport and education for the benefit of students in our middle schools," said Peter McGill, principal at NBCC Saint John.
"We understand the influence our players can have on the kids in our region and we take great pride in ensuring that that influence is a positive one," said Flames Business Development Manager, Stephen Maltby. "Partnering with NBCC SJ is a natural fit when it comes to encouraging kids to contemplate their futures and we are both proud and excited to kick off this new initiative.
The Flames are in action this week at Harbour Station hosting the Lowell Lock Monsters Wednesday night at 7:30 PM.
Tickets for all remaining Flames February, March and April home games are currently available at the Harbour Station Box Office, the Imperial Theatre Box Office, selected Irving locations (Main Street West, Champlain Heights, Millidgeville, Marr Road, Hampton and Grand Bay), and Charge-by-Phone at 657-1234 or 1-800-267-2800.
All Flames broadcasts can be heard live on 96.1 NewSong FM in Saint John or on the web at www.newsongfm.com.
The 2002-03 season marks the Saint John Flames' tenth as a member of the AHL and as the primary development organization of the National Hockey League's Calgary Flames.
