AHL American Hockey League

Canadians Sweep All-Star Classic

February 3, 2003 - American Hockey League (AHL) News Release

PORTLAND, ME ... A third-period outburst, including the game-winning goal by Jon Sim of the Utah Grizzlies, led the Canadian AHL All-Stars to a 10-7 victory over the PlanetUSA AHL All-Stars in the 2003 AHL All-Star Game, played tonight in Portland, Maine.

Sim broke a 7-7 tie with 7:51 left in regulation and finished with two goals and an assist, earning honors as the Dodge AHL All-Star Game Most Valuable Player.

The Canadian AHL All-Stars trailed by a goal before former Portland Pirates defenseman John Slaney began their four-goal third period at the 8:53 mark. For Slaney, the Philadelphia Phantoms' two-time reigning Eddie Shore Award winner as the AHL's top defenseman, it was his third point of the night and his eighth career AHL All-Star point, a new league record.

Rookies Charlie Stephens of Hershey and Darren Haydar of Milwaukee also finished with two goals and an assist apiece for the Canadians, who won their fourth consecutive AHL All-Star Game and completed their second consecutive sweep of the AHL's annual All-Star Classic. They posted a 15-13 victory in Sunday night's Pepsi AHL All-Star Skills Competition.

Manchester's Joe Corvo scored twice for the PlanetUSA AHL All-Stars, and Providence's Andy Hilbert recorded a goal and an assist.

Binghamton Senators rookie Ray Emery stopped all nine shots he faced in the third period to earn the victory in net. Maxime Ouellet of the hometown Pirates turned aside 19 of 22 shots in the first.

The Canadian All-Stars went 2-for-2 on the power play, becoming the first team in event history with two man-advantage goals in one game.

The game was witnessed in person by a standing room only crowd of 6,499, and was televised live on 11 regional sports networks across the United States and Canada.

The road to the 2003 Calder Cup Playoffs continues when the American Hockey League's 67th season resumes on Wednesday night.
