Canadians Win All-Star Game, 10-7

February 3, 2003 - American Hockey League (AHL) News Release

Portland, Maine - Grand Rapids Griffins goaltender Marc Lamothe and center Mark Mowers took to the ice as opponents on Monday night at the Cumberland County Civic Center, as the Canadian All-Stars skated to a 10-7 victory over the PlanetUSA All-Stars at the 2003 American Hockey League All-Star Game.

Mowers finished off a 2-on-0 break with Chris Ferraro at 5:26 of the opening period to give PlanetUSA an early 3-1 lead against Canadian starter Maxime Ouelette.

Lamothe inherited a 3-2 deficit when he entered the game for Canada to start the second period, and he turned away 14 of 18 shots in the middle frame to keep his team within 7-6 after 40 minutes. Mowers assisted on one of the shots that eluded Lamothe, setting up former Michigan Wolverine Mike Komisarek in the slot at the 11:49 mark.

The Canadian squad exploded for four unanswered goals in the third period against Karl Goehring, including Jon Sim's game-winner at 12:09. The Utah Grizzlies star earned MVP honors with two goals and an assist on the night.

Former Western Michigan University defenseman Joe Corvo was one of three other players who also tallied a pair of goals in the contest.

While Mowers distinguished himself with his play tonight, Lamothe made his mark on Sunday during the Pepsi AHL Skills Competition, claiming the Dodge Goaltenders' Competition by stopping 13 of 19 shots in the evening's three goaltending events.

The Griffins and the city of Grand Rapids will host the 2004 AHL All-Star Classic at a yet-to-be-determined date.
