Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

TODAY'S GAME AT A GLANCE: The Pelicans aim to avoid their second four-game losing streak of the 2008 season in game two against the Lynchburg Hillcats. The Pelicans lost a season-long four games in a row from 5/17-5/21 against the Wilmington Blue Rocks and the Kinston Indians. The Pelicans remain two games from equaling and three games from setting the first half franchise wins record of 43 set back in 2002. The Pelicans own a 4-3 series advantage over the Hillcats.

With their clinching victory in game one of the series last week in Kinston, the Pelicans halted two different streaks, snapping the K-Tribe's run of four straight first half Southern Division titles dating back to 2004, and also ending the longest playoff drought in the Carolina League, which had dated back to 2002.

Cofield: Has been superb of late, surrendering just a single earned run in his last five starts. His last start (6/5 vs. WSW) was very reminiscent of his recent success. In a season-long seven innings, he allowed just two hits and no runs, while striking out four. In his last 27.2 innings, Cofield has allowed 1 ER and 25 hits. Interestingly enough however, he has picked up a no-decision in three of his last five starts. His last loss came on 5/2 against the Salem Avalanche. Cofield now ranks fourth in the Carolina League in ERA (2.56). He also leads the league in walks allowed with 40.

The Gadsden, Alabama native was selected in the eighth round of the 2005 June free agent draft. In his first three professional seasons prior to ‘08, he compiled a 6-11 record with a 4.76 ERA, splitting time between relieving and starting.

Holliday: Making his 12th start and 14th overall appearance on the year. Has struggled mightily in his last four starts, in which he has earned the loss in all four. In his last 16.2 innings, he has allowed 37 hits and 16 earned runs. Since his last start against the Pelicans (4/29), his ERA has ballooned from 1.52 to 6.12. Holliday is fourth in the league in hits allowed (76) and sixth in the league in runs allowed (41). To his credit, Holliday has preformed much better on the road (1-1, 3.45) than at home (0-4, 9.70).

A native of Sewickly, PA, Holliday has bounced around quite a bit in the Pirates organization since being drafted in the 12th round of the 2002 draft. Now in his seventh professional season, he has compiled 128 total appearances.

MEJIA STREAKING AGAIN: Pelicans first baseman Ernesto Mejia is at it again. This time he has reached base in 26 consecutive games. His streak began on May 14th and continued last night with a 2-4 night against the K-Tribe. The longest on-base streak in the Carolina League this season was John Drennen's (KIN) 32 game on base streak, which started late last season (8/22/07) and ended this season on May 8th. Mejia is also riding a 12-game hitting streak into tonight's game against the Hillcats.

VICTORY PARADE: The Pelicans (41-22) are two victories shy of equaling the franchise record for wins in the first half (43), which was established in 2002. The birds have six games remaining in their first half schedule to try to match or break the record.

CABRERA CRUISING: Pelicans left fielder Willie Cabrera is currently riding a season-long 11-game hitting streak. During the stretch, he is 20-42 (.476) with 13 runs scored and five RBIs. He has increased his batting average from .245-.279. Last night, he continued his stellar play with a 3-5 night. It was his team-best seventh three-hit game of the season.
