Frederick Keys News Release
Frederick, MD - RHP Jake Arrieta, OF Brandon Tripp and C Matt Wieters today were named Carolina League All-Stars for the June 24th Carolina/California League All Star Game to take place at BB&T Coastal Field in Myrtle Beach, SC.
Arrieta has dazzled in his first professional season. The Orioles fifth round draft choice out of TCU in 2007 made his pro debut in Frederick striking out nine batters in four innings on opening night. He allowed just a .151 average against in his first ten starts and leads the Carolina League with 74 strikeouts. In 13 starts Arrieta is 5-2 with a 2.69 ERA.
Tripp is coming off of a season in which he was named the Orioles Minor League Player of the Year with the Delmarva Shorebirds in 2007. Selected in the 12th round of the 2006 draft out of perennial powerhouse Cal State Fullerton, Tripp has had two multi-home run games and tallied nine home runs on the year. Tripp is a .253 hitter with 34 RBI's during the first half.
Wieters, the Orioles top pick of the 2007 draft, has exceeded expectations at the top of the Carolina League in a myriad of categories in his first professional season. The switch-hitting catcher from Georgia Tech is amongst the league leaders in batting average (.342), home runs (14), slugging percentage (.591), on-base percentage (.432) and percentage of base stealers thrown out (42.2%). The All-Star Game will take place just about two hours from Wieters hometown of Goose Creek, SC.
A Keys player has won the Carolina League's Most Valuable Player in the annual contest in each of the last three years. In 2005, OF Nick Markakis wowed the home crowd at Harry Grove Stadium with two home runs to secure the honor. In 2006, OF Nolan Reimold's key RBI-double secured MVP status in Salem, VA. Last year SS Blake Davis won the most valuable player award close to his hometown in Stockton, CA.
Partial and season ticket plans are still available for the duration of the 2008 season. For information pertaining to these plans or other group events at Harry Grove Stadium contact the Keys Group Department at 301-815-9900.
