Salem Red Sox News Release

Salem, VA-The Salem Avalanche, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Houston Astros, dropped a 3-2 decision for the second night in a row against the Kinston Indians on Lewis-Gale Medical Center Field at Salem Memorial Baseball Stadium. Cirilo Cumberbatch's sixth-inning sacrifice fly pushed Kinston (33-31) ahead of Salem (28-37) for good.

Three of the five runs in the game scored in the first. Kinston opened with a pair of hits against Casey Hudspeth as John Drennen and Beau Mills each singled. After a flyout and groundout, Niuman Romero drove the tandem in with a single to left center and handed Kinston a 2-zilch lead.

In the home half, Salem struck for a run against Kinston's Hector Rondon. With Jordan Parraz at first on a walk, Mark Ori smashed a double to right-center and split the lead in two. It was one of Ori's three hits in the game.

Salem All-Star Jimmy Van Ostrand squared the game at two in the third. With two on and one out, Van Ostrand served a single to center and scored Tim Torres.

The Avs, however, were unable to take the lead in the game. Jared Goedert began the sixth inning with a single to right field. He reached second on a ground ball and third on a wild pitch for Cirilo Cumberbatch. The right-fielder elevated a ball to center that scored Goedert and gave Kinston the lead and, eventually, the win.

Kinston's bullpen threesome of Sung-Wei Tseng, Jim Deters and Luis Perdomo tossed three scoreless innings (one each) to push Kinston to its third one-run victory of the season against the Avalanche.

Salem aims to avoid the sweep Wednesday as Sergio Severino throws for the Avalanche against Kinston's Carlton Smith.
