Frederick Drops Fourth Straight
June 10, 2008 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Frederick Keys News Release
The Wilmington Blue Rocks have the second-lowest run totals in the Carolina League, but you wouldn't have known it from watching this series. After putting up nine runs last night, the Blue Rocks defeated the Keys tonight 8-2.
After a one-hour and eighteen-minute rain delay, action got under way at Harry Grove Stadium. Left-handed Baltimore Orioles pitcher Adam Loewen pitched the first inning. The big leaguer has been on the shelf due to elbow problems. In his first rehab appearance with the Keys, Loewen pitched a perfect inning, striking out two.
It was Jake Renshaw's turn in the rotation, and he came in to pitch in the second inning. After setting the side down in order in his first inning of work, Renshaw ran into some trouble in the third. Two singles and a hit-by-pitch loaded the bases for Wilmington. Kurt Mertins then unloaded them with a two-run single, to give Wilmington their first lead of the game. With runners on the corners, Joe Dickerson hit an infield single, driving in another run, and giving the Blue Rocks a 3-0 lead.
They'd tack on two more in the top of the fifth. After Jarrod Dyson reach on an infield hit, Chris McConnell hit a towering homerun to left field, his first of the season, to give Wilmington a 5-0 lead.
The Keys started to chip away in the bottom half of the fifth. Frederick loaded the bases for Brandon Snyder, and he delivered. The Keys first baseman hit a two-run double to the wall in right, to pull Frederick to within three.
Those two runs were all they could get in this one. Wilmington scored another three runs in the seventh to win by a final of 8-2.
Ben Swaggerty got the win for Wilmington. He threw 2.2 scoreless innings in relief to pick up his first win of the season. Renshaw got the loss. He allowed all eight runs in 5.1 innings. His record dropped to 6-5.
The Keys and Blue Rocks will lock up in the finale of this three-game set tomorrow evening at Harry Grove Stadium. For ticket information, contact our box office at 1-877-8-GO-KEYS.
