Pelicans Exact Revenge And Shred Hillcats In Game Two, 11-3

Myrtle Beach, S.C. - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans (42-23) reverted back to championship form in a dominating game two win over the Lynchburg Hillcats (26-39) by a final count of 11-3 in front of 3,015 fans at BB&T Coastal Field. The win moves the Pelicans one win from equaling and two wins from breaking the first half franchise wins record of 43 set back in 2002.

In the first inning, the Hillcats took an early 1-0 lead. Brian Friday led off by drawing a walk. After a single by Jim Negrych and a walk to Jamie Romack, Steve Lerud hit a fielder's choice groundout to score Friday.

The Pelicans grabbed their first advantage of the game in the bottom of the second. Brandon Hicks drew a one out walk. A single by Concepcion Rodriguez and a throwing error by shortstop Brian Friday put runners at second and third for Paul Bennett. The utility infielder hit an opposite field single through the right side of the infield to score both runners to give the Birds a 2-1 edge.

In the fourth, the Hillcats tied the game at 2-2. Jared Keel led off the frame with a single. Eddie Prasch then followed with a walk. A single by Tony Mansolino loaded the bases for Alex Presley. He proceeded to ground into a double play that the Pelicans turned, thereby conceding the run.

The Pelicans erupted in the home half of the fourth to take full control of the game. Tyler Flowers jump-started the inning with a leadoff solo home run to left field. After the Pelicans loaded the bases courtesy of two walks and a single by Concepcion Rodriguez, Jon Mark Owings ripped a double down the left field line to score two and give the Pelicans a 5-2 lead. Gorkys Hernandez later hit an RBI single to score Rodriguez. Willie Cabrera capped the five run inning with an RBI bounce out to third that scored Jon Mark Owings.

The Hillcats cut the deficit to 7-3 in the fifth inning on an single by Steve Lerud that brought home Jim Negrych, who hit a one out double.

The Pelicans put the game out of reach in the bottom of the seventh inning by plating four more runs. The Pelicans again loaded the bases for Brandon Hicks, who hit a two run single to give the Pelicans a 9-3 lead. Later in the frame, Concepcion Rodriguez hit a two run single of his own up the middle to stretch the lead to 11-3.

Concepcion Rodriguez had an exceptional day at the plate, going 3-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs. A well balanced attack fueled the fire, as eight of nine Pelicans recorded at least one base hit.

Pelicans starter Kyle Cofield earned the win in 5.2 innings of operation. Before reaching his maximum pitch count in the middle of the sixth, he allowed six hits and three runs. Reliever Michael Broadway backed up Cofield in 3.1 outstanding innings to earn his first save of the season. Broadway did not allow a single hit nor run in his appearance.

The Pelicans take on the Hillcats in the series finale on Wednesday, June 11th at 7:05 p.m. The Pelicans will hand the ball to RHP Ryne Reynoso (6-3, 3.39), while the Hillcats will counter with LHP Anthony Watson (3-7, 4.24).
