Two Salem players headed to All-Star Game
June 10, 2008 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Salem Red Sox News Release
Salem, VA-The Salem Avalanche, Class A-Advanced affiliate, is proud to announce that two of its players have been selected to the Carolina League All-Star Team for 2008. Catcher Koby Clemens and infielder/outfielder Jimmy Van Ostrand will represent the Avalanche in the California-Carolina League All-Star Game to be played at BB&T Coastal Field on Tuesday June 24th in Myrtle Beach, SC.
"I think their addition to the Carolina League roster is well-deserved," Salem Manager Jim Pankovits said. Jimmy has had an outstanding year and has been one of our most consistent and productive hitters while Koby has been a fixture in the middle of our lineup and continues to improve every day."
Van Ostrand, in his first Carolina League season, currently stands seventh in the circuit with a batting average of .304. Between May 23rd and 31st, Van Ostrand strung together 11 consecutive games with a hit and drove 17 runs across the plate. On the first day of the streak, Van Ostrand sent five teammates across home, a team season-best in RBI. Of Van Ostrand's team-leading 39 RBI, 28 came in the second month of the season. The Canadian's versatility has also been an asset to the Avalanche-he's started 22 times each in left field and at first base.
Clemens, also in his first year at the Advanced-A level, stands a hair under .300 with a batting average of .299, good for second on the team. Clemens, along with Van Ostrand and Mark Ori, is tied for the team lead with four home runs. The Salem catcher sits third on the Avalanche roster with 26 RBI. In his first season behind the plate, Clemens has apprehended 39.7% of possible base-stealers, second in the Carolina League to fellow All-Star Matt Wieters of Frederick.
The Carolina League and California League will square off for the 13th time on Tuesday, June 24th at BB&T Coastal Field, the home of the Myrtle Beach Pelicans. The host club led all teams with a contingent of six players on the roster. The two-day event also will include the 2008 California-Carolina League All-Star Gala to be held at Hard Rock Park at 7 PM on Monday, June 23rd.
