P-Bruins Defeat Penguins 4-3 in OT

Wilkes-Barre, PA - The Providence Bruins extended their point streak to five games as they defeated the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins 4-3 in overtime this evening at the Mohegan Sun Arena. The P-Bruins had goals from Jordan Caron, David Warsofsky, Trent Whitfield and the overtime winner from Craig Cunningham.

It only took 48 seconds for the P-Bruins to score on the Penguins, who sit in second place in the American Hockey League. From the low corner, Josh Hennessy threw the puck towards the Penguins' net where Caron deflected it beautifully past Scott Munroe. The P-Bruins continued to dominate the Penguins, reading the Penguins breakout and throwing shots at Munroe. They efforts paid off at 15:47 when the P-Bruins rushed 4-on-2 in the Penguins zone. Hennessy fed Craig Cunningham across the slot allowing the rookie to dish it to Warsofsky breaking into the slot. Warsofsky left Munroe looking when he fired a slap shot from the top of the slot, scoring his second goal of the season. The Penguins cut the deficit by one just over a minute later when Colin MacDonald's shot found it's way to the back of the net.

The P-Bruins got the scoring started early in the second frame to regain a two-goal lead. Bobby Robins fed a streaking Whitfield in the neutral zone, allowing the captain to release a shot from the top of the circle, beating Munroe five-hole at 4:13. Brad Thiessen relieved Munroe after the goal. The P-Bruins' defense was solid and kept the Penguins off the board, even stalwarting a 5-on-3 opportunity. Anton Khudobin was flawless between the pipes and the P-Bruins went into the final intermission leading 3-1.

Wilkes-Barre/Scranton came out for the third period flying. The Penguins capitalized on the P-Bruins mistakes in the defensive zone and scored two quick goals to even the score at three. Despite a few solidscoring opportunities, Providence couldn't find the back of the net and extra time was needed to decide the game.

Right off the faceoff, the P-Bruins completely dominated the Penguins. The hard forecheck paid off and just 27 seconds into overtime Cunningham beat Thiessen for his ninth goal of the season and the game-winner.

Khudobin's 23 saves earned him the win, while Munroe suffered the loss, stopping seven attempts in 24 minutes of play before being relieved by Thiessen. In 36:14 of play, Thiessen blocked 8 of 9 Providence attempts.

The P-Bruins are on break for the AHL All-Star Classic next weekend. Rookie Carter Camper will represent the team at the game to be held in Atlantic City, NJ. The club returns to The Dunk on Friday, February 3 versus the Springfield Falcons. The puck drops at 7:05 p.m. for "RI Lot Hat Night."
