Ontario Suffers in 3-0 Loss to Colorado
March 28, 2012 - ECHL (ECHL)
Ontario Reign News Release
LOVELAND, CO.- The Ontario Reign (41-20-5-3), proud affiliate of the NHL's Los Angeles Kings, fell in a hard fought battle against the Eagles (36-27-1-5) Tuesday night before 5,289 at the Budwieser Events Center. The Reign's offense couldn't convert any of their nine power-play opportunities, but special teams killed six of seven penalties.
The Reign are still within just four points of the league-leading Alaska Aces for the Western Conference, and hold their spot atop the Pacific Division by one point over the Las Vegas Wranglers.
The Eagles flew off the bench putting on the offensive pressure early in the game and carrying it throughout the majority of the first period. At the 4:11 mark Aaron Schneekloth fired a hard snap shot past J.F. Berube's glove side for the first tally of the game. In the final few minutes of the period, Ontario found their stride and came within just two shots on goal of Colorado who had three times as many just moments before.
Colorado held onto their one goal lead throughout the second period. Ontario had a number of good chances in close to the Eagles' net, but couldn't get the puck past the crease. Berube's strong goaltending kept several Colorado chances out of the cage as the Eagles managed to get by the Reign defense a number of times and kept up their speed and control.
Ontario still couldn't get it going in the final period for a comeback and gave up two more goals. Halfway through the period Colorado's Jake Marto found the back of the net off passes from Joey Sides and Riley Nelson to give his team the two-goal advantage and the momentum for the rest of the game. Four minutes and 40 seconds later, Sides struck again this time scoring the power-play goal on a top shelf shot giving his team the decisive 3-0 win.
In his professional debut, Damien Ketlo earned the shutout stopping all of Ontario's 27 shots. Berube took the loss saving three of 35 shots.
Three Stars:
1) COL - Damien Ketlo
2) COL - Jake Marto
3) COL - Aaron Slattengren
