Nailers Put up 55 Shots in Loss to Royals
March 28, 2012 - ECHL (ECHL)
Wheeling Nailers News Release
READING, PA- Throughout the 13-game season series, the Wheeling Nailers have controlled the pace of play against the Reading Royals, sending a plethora of shots onto the net. However, in six of those games, Mark Owuya has been the difference, and he was again on Wednesday night. Owuya stopped all 55 Wheeling shots, helping his Royals to a 3-0 win at Sovereign Center.
Both goaltenders came to play in this hockey game, as the scoreboard remained blank through the first period, and up until the 7:51 mark of the second. That's when the Royals picked up a huge goal, while playing on the man advantage. Yannick Riendeau took the puck behind the Wheeling net, and sent a pass out to Denny Urban, who was cheating in from the right point. Urban quickly snapped a shot over Patrick Killeen's left shoulder, with Riendeau and Casey Haines drawing the assists, as the home team took a 1-0 lead.
As the game progressed, the Royals weren't getting a lot of scoring chances, but the Nailers continued to buzz around the Reading defensive zone. Unfortunately for Wheeling, Mark Owuya wasn't about to budge, preventing the visitors from lighting the lamp. With less than 90 seconds to go in regulation, the Nailers looked to pull Killeen for the extra attacker, only to see Yannick Tifu take a feed from Ethan Cox, scoring from center ice, as the Wheeling netminder sprawled back toward the crease. Yannick Riendeau added an empty netter with 1.3 seconds left, giving the Royals a 3-0 victory.
Mark Owuya was magnificent in goal for Reading, stopping all 55 shots he faced for the shutout. Patrick Killeen was charged for two goals on 18 shots, as he took the tough loss loss for Wheeling.
The Nailers will play their final road game of the regular season on Friday night at 7:00, when they visit the Trenton Titans. Wheeling will then return home on Saturday night for a 7:35 face-off against the Elmira Jackals.
