Omaha Launches Four Homers to Win on Get-Out Day

July 10, 2022 - International League (IL)
Omaha Storm Chasers News Release

Papillion, Neb. - The Omaha Storm Chasers (42-41) took the series finale against the Toledo Mud Hens (42-41) 9-6. Omaha won the series 5-2 and holds a 7-5 edge in the season series.

Right-hander Ándres Núñez came in to finish pitching the third, retiring the final two batters to extend his streak of not allowing a run to 20.1 innings. That streak is the longest by a Storm Chaser this season, beating the streak of 20.0 innings set by right-hander Brad Peacock. Núñez has gone 18 games without allowing an earned run, tied with Peacock's streak for the longest in the International League.

In the bottom of the third, center fielder Dairon Blanco hit a single to extend his hit streak to 15 games, the longest hitting streak on by a Storm Chaser this season. Right fielder Nate Eaton put up the game's first runs, hitting his eighth homer for Omaha to open a 2-0 lead.

Omaha hit back-to-back homers with two away in the fifth inning to give the Storm Chasers a 4-0 lead. Eaton hit his second long ball of the game before left fielder Brewer Hicklen blasted a homer that was 110 mph off the bat and traveled an estimated 493 feet. The Storm Chases have now hit back-to-back home runs four times this season, with Hicklen and Eaton pairing up for two of the four.

In the sixth, the Mud Hens responded with four runs of their own, using one swing of the bat to tie the game on a grand slam, the fifth grand slam allowed by Omaha this season.

Left-hander Austin Cox (Win, 4-4) came in to finish the fifth, going 2.1 innings and allowing two earned runs.

Omaha responded with a rally of their own in the seventh. Blanco started the inning with a ground-rule double before first baseman Nick Pratto walked. Eaton juiced the bases with a single and Hicklen drew an RBI walk to retake the lead for the Storm Chasers.

Shortstop Iván Castillo hit a sacrifice fly to score Pratto and extend the inning. A passed ball moved the runners up and brough another Omaha run across the plate. Two more Chasers drew walks, this time second baseman Clay Dungan and designated hitter Freddy Fermin got the free passes to load the bases. Catcher José Briceño hit a sacrifice fly to make the score 8-4.

The Mud Hens wouldn't go down easy, putting up a pair of runs in the eighth to cut the deficit to two runs. Pratto responded with a home run in the bottom of the inning and secure the 9-6 win.

Next week Omaha heads to Rochester, New York to take on the Red Wings in a six-game series. The series opens with a 6:05 p.m. CDT start on Tuesday, July 12. Coverage will begin at 5:45 p.m. on the Sarpy County Tourism Pregame Show on 1180 The Zone.
