Indians Split Series with Sunday Shutout

Iowa Cubs News Release

INDIANAPOLIS, IN - The Indianapolis Indians (40-42) secured a series split with the Iowa Cubs (37-46) with a shutout win on Sunday at Victory Field, taking the finale by a final score of 2-0.

After their offensive showcase last night, Iowa's lineup went quiet in today's game. Nick Madrigal and Jackson Frazier both singled in the first, but neither run came around to score. The two base hits would be the only two hits the I-Cubs would collect against Indianapolis until the sixth inning, as starter Zach Matson and reliever Noe Toribio combined to send down ten of twelve batters between the second and fifth innings. The two runners that did reach - one on a walk and one on an error - were both caught stealing, meaning Indianapolis faced the minimum through the middle innings.

On the other side, Iowa's pitching staff was almost as dominant. Javier Assad retired nine of ten batters he faced in his second Triple-A start, with Carter Bins serving as the sole exception with a solo home run in the second. His blast gave the Indians a 1-0 lead.

After Assad finished his outing, Major League rehabber Daniel Norris took over in the fourth. He allowed two hits and a walk in his first inning of work, but limited Indianapolis to just one unearned run on a passed ball. He then sent the Indians down in order in the fifth, leaving the game at 2-0 in favor of Indianapolis.

Next out of Iowa's bullpen was Sean Newcomb, who put in his longest outing of the year for Iowa with three scoreless innings. He allowed just one baserunner on a walk in the ninth, but erased the damage one batter later with a double play.

The lockdown performance by Iowa's bullpen was matched by Indianapolis', however. Cam Alldred and Cam Vieaux combined for three more one-two-three innings in the seventh, eighth, and ninth, and Indianapolis took the series finale by a final score of 2-0.

POSTGAME NOTES:

Javier Assad was credited with his first Triple-A loss in his second game for Iowa.

Iowa's pitching staff combined for 69 strikeouts in the six games against Indianapolis, which is their most in a series this season. Their previous high of 63 was also achieved against the Indians in the teams' first series at the end of April.

The bullpen allowed just one unearned run today, closing the book on the series with a combined 0.99 ERA (3ER/27.1IP) in the six games.

Carter Bins hit home runs in each of his last two starts against Iowa, making him the eighth player to hit home runs in back-to-back games against the I-Cubs this year.

Iowa will head home and prepare for a six-game series against the Buffalo Bisons, which begins on Tuesday. First pitch between the I-Cubs and the Bisons is set for 6:38. For more information and tickets, visit www.iowacubs.com.
