Bulls Falter in Series Finale

DURHAM, NC - The Durham Bulls (45-39) dropped their series finale against the Memphis Redbirds (46-38) 5-1 on Sunday evening at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park. With the loss, Durham splits the six game set with Memphis 3-3.

The Redbirds struck first as DH Alec Burleson used an RBI groundout in the fourth. In the sixth, an RBI single from RF Moises Gomez and an RBI double from Burleson gave the Redbirds a 3-0 lead. Memphis would remain hot at the plate in the seventh as LF Scott Hurst tattooed the Redbirds' second RBI double of the night. Durham got on the board in the seventh, as CF Grant Witherspoon crossed the plate on a wild pitch.

DH Brandon Lowe recorded two hits in his first full game with the Bulls as part of his Major League Rehab Assignment. Durham 2B Miles Mastrobuoni added two hits of his own to match Lowe, with Hurst posting a game-high four hits for Memphis.

Durham pitcher Joe Weiland in his Bulls debut allowed one hit in three scoreless frames, ringing up three strikeouts. Memphis starter Aaron Brooks picked up the win after six shutout innings, recording nine strikeouts. Bulls relief pitcher Pete Fairbanks picked up the loss.

The Bulls are set to open a six-game series on the road against the Gwinnett Stripers, the Triple-A affiliate of the Atlanta Braves on Tuesday, July 12. Starting pitchers for both sides have not yet been announced, with first pitch scheduled for 7:05pm.

The Bulls will return to the DBAP for game one of a nine-game homestand starting with a three-game set versus the Norfolk Tides beginning on Friday, July 22nd. First pitch of the series opener is set for 6:35pm.
