July 10, 2022 - International League (IL)
Worcester Red Sox News Release
Several hundred Leicester residents were welcomed to Polar Park on Friday, July 8, for Leicester Night, the 10th of 18 town takeovers scheduled for the 2022 season. As part of the takeover, multiple Leicester residents and organizations were recognized during pre-game ceremonies for their outstanding work in the community.
A special five-minute routine was performed by a large group of athletes from Leicester's Gigueres Gymnastics, a facility offering gymnastics, dance, karate, and swimming lessons.
Deja New, a Leicester non-profit marketplace dedicated to raising money for local charities and families in need, was honored as "The Heart of Worcester." Deja New President Cheryl Cooney threw a Ceremonial First Pitch on the organization's behalf.
Leicester native and retired Worcester Fire Department Lieutenant Gordon Berryman was named the night's Hometown Hero for his 28 years of service. Berryman also has ties to the Boston Red Sox, as he has been an usher at JetBlue Park at Fenway South for the past 18 years.
A Leicester veteran and current serviceman were each recognized for their service. Chief Petty Officer Paul Lemersie was honored for his 21 years in the United States Navy, where he served in Southeast Asia, and 20-year-old Private First Class Connor Patrick Kelley of the United States Marines was recognized for his ongoing career that started when he was 18.
In addition, multiple Leicester Little Leaguers participated in in-game promotions. Hudson Fontaine was the night's "Table Talk Pies in the Sky" contestant, Ryder Walsh was "The National Grid Power Kid," Henry Carney was the Junior Announcer, youngsters Luke and Hattie participated in the "Clinton Savings Piggy Bank Pursuit," and a group of Little Leaguers sang "Take Me Out to the Ball Game" as the 7th inning-stretch singers.
The following towns have upcoming takeovers: Leominster (7/24), Southbridge (8/5), Springfield (8/19), and Paxton (9/3).
