ELMIRA, NY- In a rough-and-tumble game featuring 96 penalty minutes, the Elmira Jackals edged the Kalamazoo Wings, 4-1, on Wednesday night at First Arena.

Elmira took an early lead in period number one with the tenth goal of the year from Cason Hohhman. The ECHL's leading goal scorer among rookies settled himself in front of the Kalamazoo goal and deflected a shot from Spiro Goulakos and past Kalamazoo goalie Joel Martin.

With time winding down in the period, Justin Taylor found an open area of ice near the Elmira goal and steered a shot towards the net. The initial save was made by C.J. Motte, but Ludwig Blomstrand was on the doorstep to clean up the loose puck to deadlock the game at one.

Midway through the second period, Elmira took a 2-1 lead by crashing the goal and burying an unoccupied puck neighboring the crease. After a try from Allan McPherson was denied by Martin, Tyler Currier poked the puck over the line for his second of the season.

At the end of Kalamazoo's first power play try, McPherson, who was serving two minutes for hooking, streaked out of the box and caught a stretch feed from Goulakos. McPherson carried in behind the Kalamazoo defense, and went to the backhand on Martin. Martin made the first stop, but McPherson followed up with a second try that went into the goal, giving Elmira a 3-1 edge.

While trailing by two goals early in the third period, the Wings were gifted a four-minute power play after a high-stick from Goulakos. However, it would be the Jackals that would build upon their lead with a shorthanded tally from Jacob MacDonald. The Elmira forward's quick wrist shot beat Martin high and to the stick side to give the Jackals an insurmountable lead.

Notes: The Wings and Jackals will play two more games in the next three days (12/4, 12/5) at First Arena. Kalamazoo registered a season-high 41 minutes in penalties. It was the first of five meetings between the Wings and the Jackals. Kalamazoo have lost a season-high five straight games.
