Nailers Acquire Defenseman Mathew Maione from Beast
December 2, 2015 - ECHL (ECHL)
Wheeling Nailers News Release
WHEELING, WV- The Wheeling Nailers, proud ECHL affiliate of the Pittsburgh Penguins, have announced a trade. Wheeling has acquired defenseman Mathew Maione from the Brampton Beast, in exchange for future considerations.
Maione, 25, joins the Nailers during his second full season of professional hockey, having appeared in 97 career games with Brampton and the Fort Wayne Komets. Mathew broke into the pros at the end of the 2013-14 campaign, registering three points in 11 regular season games with Fort Wayne, before skating in all 11 of the Komets' postseason contests, adding four assists to his statistics. Last season, the Toronto, Ontario took his talents to nearby Brampton, where he shined as a rookie, accumulating 14 goals, 29 assists, and 43 points. His 43 points were the most in the ECHL among rookie blueliners. Thus far this season, Maione has collected four goals, six assists, and ten points in 17 games, with six of the ten points coming against the North Division.
"We are glad to be able to get Mathew, as he brings an offensive element to our team that we don't have," said Nailers Head Coach Clark Donatelli. "He had a good camp in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, and he will help our power play, adding some offense to our defensive core."
Prior to making the jump to the ECHL, Mathew played his amateur hockey in both the Ontario Hockey League and Atlantic University Sport. His three seasons of junior hockey were spent with the Niagara IceDogs and Guelph Storm, as he tallied eight goals, 27 assists, and 35 points in 173 games. Maione then went on to the University of Prince Edward Island, where he appeared in 28 games in each of his four years with Panthers, notching eight goals, 57 assists, and 65 points.
"I am really excited for the opportunity to play in Wheeling, as I will hopefully be able to adjust quickly and help the team win, while showcasing myself," Maione said. "I got to know Clark Donatelli during training camp with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, and I have tons of respect for him as a player and as a coach. I want to thank everyone with the Beast organization - the fans were awesome and it was a privilege to play at home, but at the same time, I am really excited to come to Wheeling and gain experience with a new team."
Because the Nailers are at the roster limit (20 active, two reserve), they will need to make a move in order to add Maione. They are allowed 72 hours to do so.
The Nailers will play three home games over the weekend. On Friday night, The Highlands and Bordas & Bordas present Flat Screen Friday, as Wheeling hosts South Carolina at 7:35 on a Frosty Friday. On Saturday, Star Wars takes center stage, with Star Wars characters in attendance, t-shirts to the first 2,000 fans, and specialty jerseys worn by the players, as the Nailers challenge the Stingrays at 7:35. Saturday is also Teddy Bear Toss Night. Finally, on Sunday, McDonald's $5 kids tickets will be available, and fans will be able to skate with the team following the 4:05 contest against Elmira.
