Oil Kings Lose Close One in Regina

February 21, 2016 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Edmonton Oil Kings News Release

Finishing a three games in three days road trip the Edmonton Oil Kings gave it their all firing 49 shots on net but came up short Sunday afternoon losing 3-1 to the Regina Pats.

Dario Meyer scored his 11th on the year and Payton Lee stopped 28 of 31 shots in the loss.

Regina's Cole Sanford opened the game's scoring 23 seconds in and put the Pats up by two 12 minutes later before Meyer got the Oil Kings on the board late in the first. Dysin Mayo and Anatolii Elizarov collected the assists. The helper was Mayo's 100th career WHL assist.

That was all the scoring until Chase Harrison got a seeing-eye shot through a crowd and past Lee for the insurance marker 4:34 into the third.

The Oil Kings had their chances on the powerplay. They generated a ton of shots on Pats netminder Tyler Brown especially on a long 5-on-3 opportunity but were unable to solve him. Brett Pollock and Lane Bauer both hit the crossbar as well but as the old saying goes, you have to be good to be lucky and lucky to be good and Brown was both today for the Pats.

The loss puts Edmonton (25-28-6-1) six points behind the Pats for 7th in the Eastern Conference. The Moose Jaw Warriors helped the Oil Kings this afternoon as well beating Swift Current 5-1 leaving the Broncos eight points behind Edmonton for the last wild card spot.

The Oil Kings head home to host the Portland Winterhawks on Wednesday February 24 at 7pm. This will be the last time the Winterhawks will be at Rexall Place.
