Medicine Hat Tigers News Release
Medicine Hat, AB -- The Medicine Hat Tigers had some emotion heading into Saturday's matchup with the Portland Winterhawks. The Tigers were coming off a 3-2 victory over the Calgary Hitmen 24 hours prior, snapping an 8 game losing streak.
The game was a fast paced matchup as both teams hadn't seen each other since December 5th of last season, as both teams were virtually changed since that game. Portland got out to an early lead as Alex Schoenborn netted his 23rd of the season beating Tigers starter Nick Schneider. Six minutes later rookie Conor MacEachern potted just his 2nd of the year to extend the lead 2-0. Schoenborn would strike again for his second of the night on the power play, heading to the intermission up 3-0.
Once again it was parents weekend as the flock of family was seated in the upper deck, getting a birds eye view of the game. The Canalta Centre was also welcome to Portland's Booster Club who is making the trip from Oregon through the Central Division with the team. The period saw the Winterhawks score three more times including a power play goal from Dominic Turgeon just past the midway point. Max Gerlach would score the lone goal for the Tabbies, in front of his family (who made the trek from Texas), as he went bar down on Adin Hill to break the shutout. Medicine Hat couldn't find the net again in the period and trailed 6-1 after 40 minutes.
The final frame saw a good push by the Tigers as Mack Shields entered the game in place of Nick Schneider. Shields was seeing his first game action in 3 contests. Evan Weinger beat Shields early in the period to extend the lead once again. The Tigers started getting physical on the Winterhawks defence, which created offensive chances, however goaltender Adin Hill was solid, making some great saves along the way. Portland would add one more to complete a 8 goal outburst on this night.
