Vancouver Giants News Release
Vancouver, B.C. - The Vancouver Giants defeated the WHL-leading Kelowna Rockets 4-2 on Saturday night at the Pacific Coliseum. The Giants got their goals from Chase Lang, Thomas Foster, Carter Popoff and Trevor Cox. Ty Ronning had three assists while Cox recorded his 200th career assist in the win.
Chase Lang opened the scoring for the Giants just over halfway through the first period on a rebound. It was Lang's 26th goal of the season and fourth in his last four periods after he recorded a hat trick against the Rockets Friday night in Kelowna.
The Rockets responded in the second period, getting a power play goal from Tyson Baillie after Dylan Plouffe took a double minor penalty for high sticking. Vancouver goalie Ryan Kubic made a few marvelous saves late in the stanza to keep it tied at 1-1.
The Giants broke the deadlock in the third period when Foster tallied a power play marker in the opening minute of the frame. Minutes later, Cox scored on another man advantage, chipping the puck past Kelowna goalie Brodan Salmond after a scramble in the crease. Cox picked up his 200th career assist later in the period when he set up Popoff for a beautiful goal after forcing a turnover deep in the Rockets' zone. Lucas Johansen would get one more for Kelowna on a power play, but the Giants held on for the 4-2 win.
Kubic made 29 saves in the victory.
The Giants are back in action Sunday afternoon when they host the Kamloops Blazers at the Pacific Coliseum. Captain Tyler Benson is expected to return to Vancouver's lineup. The 17-year-old hasn't played since December 30th, due to a lower body injury. Puck drop is at 5:00pm. For tickets, go to TicketLeader.ca or call 604.4.GIANTS (604.444.2687).
