Reading Fightin Phils News Release

(READING, PA) - With one week to go before their next scheduled off day, the Fightin Phils were looking for a strong finish to the month of July. In Tuesday night's doubleheader against the Rumble Ponies, they battled back to win game two and end a season-high four-game losing streak. Wednesday's series finale brought an end to the eight-game homestand, with Darick Hall leading the offensive charge with three runs batted in and a two-run homer that exited the stadium in right field. With an 8-6 win before a Camp Day crowd of 7,054 at FirstEnergy Stadium, the R-Phils finished the homestand with a pair of splits and hit the road with a five-and-a-half game lead in the Eastern Division.

In his return from Lehigh Valley, spot starter Jose Taveras got immediate help in the first when the Fightins scored four runs off Tony Dibrell in his second Double-A start. A two-RBI double from Jose Gomez was sandwiched between a pair of run-scoring singles from Josh Stephen and Arquimedes Gamboa. Every little bit helped, with Binghamton battling back all afternoon, starting with a solo home run from Gavin Cecchini in the second that made it 4-1.

Two more runs came across for Reading in the second when Hall singled home Mickey Moniak after a two out walk and a stolen base. On a payoff pitch, Cornelius Randolph scored Hall with a double, extending the lead to 6-1. Quinn Brodey's second homer of the series got the Rumble Ponies a run back in the top of the fourth, but Hall's 18th bomb in the home half gave him three runs batted in and pushed the lead to 8-2.

Taveras (3-0) completed five innings, and Grant Dyer retired the side in order in the sixth before Binghamton got a two-run homer from Jason Krizan in the seventh. With the deficit cut in half at 8-4, the visitors' comeback continued when they put a pair on in the eighth inning against Jakob Hernandez, who spun another scoreless inning that featured a pair of strikeouts.

Things got tense in the top of the ninth when Krizan and David Thompson opened things up with singles against Fightin Phils closer Addison Russ in a non-save situation. Another single from pinch-hitter Michael Paez loaded the bases and brought up the tying run, and Cecchini drew a walk to make it 8-5. Andres Gimenez reached on a fielder's choice to stay out of a game-ending double play that brought in the Rumble Ponies sixth run, then stole second base to put the tying run in scoring position. Russ saved his best for last, finishing Luis Caprio swinging for the win and 4-2 regular season record against the Rumble Ponies.
