No foolin': Steelheads stay hot with 5-1 win over Gulls

Idaho Steelheads News Release

BOISE, Idaho - The Idaho Steelheads jumped out to an early lead over the Gulls and never looked back, beating San Diego 5-1 at the Bank of America Centre Friday night. 5,016 fans watched goaltender Matt Yeats earn his first win in his second game in a Steelheads uniform (9-2-3 on the season).

Idaho had the first power play early in the game and capitalized quickly. Tim Verbeek skated the puck down the left side and attempted a centering pass to Lance Galbraith, but instead Gulls' Sean Murphy deflected it in his own net as he tried to intercept the pass. The power play tally came at 3:20 of the first period. San Diego answered back on a two-on-one rush. Jon Shockey fed a beautiful pass to Grady Moore who caught the right corner of the net with a wrister, beating Matt Yeats at 7:04. Scott Burt tallied Idaho's second goal of the game after Warren Peters tried to get the puck past Simon Lajeunesse, but Lajeunesse made the save and Burt chipped in the rebound. Idaho increased the lead to two goals on a play that captain Dan Vandermeer set up. Vandermeer skated the puck in and faked a pass as he skated to the goal line. He passed to Verbeek who had set up in front of the net and Verbeek notched his second of the game.

The Steelheads scored the lone goal of the middle period. At 3:09, Idaho's Jonathan Zion carried the puck into the Gulls' zone and passed to Peters who recorded his 20th of the season.

Idaho applied pressure early in the third and the team's leading scorer Bobby Russell tallied his 26th goal on a one-timer from inside the blue line. Vandermeer provided the helper on the even-strength goal that came at 5:04.

Idaho outshot San Diego 38-23 in the contest. The two teams play the final game of the three-game series tomorrow night in the Steelheads 2004-05 regular season home finale.
