
Gladiators Beat Checkers, 6-4

Atlanta Gladiators News Release
The Gladiators jumped out to a 4-0 lead and cruised to a 6-4 win over the Charlotte Checkers on Saturday night in font of 7,708 at the Arena at Gwinnett Center.
Joe Bourne's slapshot from the left wing point beat Charlotte netminder Kelly Guard to give the Gladiators a 1-0 lead. Mike Stahopoulos and Kevin Doell chipped in assists on the goal at 6:47 of the opening period.
After having a goal disallowed earlier in a 5-minute major power play, Kevin Doell got redemption with his second tally of the game at 16:53 of the first period. Cam Brown and Stathopoulos added the assists on the goal digging the puck off the wall and moving it along to Doell for the tally.
Kris Goodjohn pushed the Gladiators lead to 3-0 with less than 1 minute remaining in the first. Goodjohn beat Guard with a one-timer in the slot off a feed from Adam Smyth out of the corner. Andrew Oke added an assist on the goal at 19:22 of the opening period.
Mike Stathopoulos extended the Gladiators lead to 4-0 with 15th goal of the season just 5:45 into the second period. Pascal Pelletier picked up an assist on the goal with a dipsy doodle move past the defenseman and hung on to the puck long enough to draw the defensemen to himself and leaving Stathopoulos wide open in the slot.
Charlotte cut into the Gladiators lead early into the third period on a goal by Juris Stals 1:29 into the third period. Bogdan Rudenko and Dave Liffiton picked up the assists on the Charlotte goal.
Ryan Glenn's slapshot at 5:58 of the third period cut the Gladiators lead to two goals. Jason Dawe and Dwight Helminen added the assists on the tally.
Mike Vigilante scored what proved to be the game-winning goal at 8:41 of the third period. Kevin Doell tapped the puck ahead to Vigilante who then picked up his own rebound and flipped the puck past Guard for the goal. Brad Shell also added an assist on the goal.
Charlotte continued battling as Bogdan cut the Gladiators lead to 5-3 in the third period. Mike Wirll and Lee Falardeau added the assists on the Charlotte lead.
Mike Wirll drew the Checkers within a goal on the power play with Guard pulled in favor of an extra attacker with 1:13 remaining in the third period as he was able to jam a puck past Gladiators netminder Sean Fields. Falardeau and Helminen added the assists on the tally.
Kevin Doell iced the contest with his second goal of the night with just 38 seconds left in the final period. Doell moved the puck out the Gladiators zone on the penalty kill and fired the puck into the empty net.
Sean Fields made 32 saves in the win for the Gladiators who improved to 36-24-8 in the win while going 1-for-5 on the power play.
