St. Paul Saints News Release
WINNIPEG, MB - There would be no late inning heroics for the St. Paul Saints on Friday night at Shaw Park. As a matter of fact, it was the Winnipeg Goldeyes Ray Sadler who provided the spark as the Saints lost 5-4.
With the score tied at four in the bottom of the eighth the league's second leading hitter, Ryan Scoma, scorched a single back up the middle. The next batter, Sadler, hammered an RBI double off the left-center field wall that scored Scoma and proved to be the game winner.
The Saints offense, which was hot for the first half of the game, went cold during the second half as the final 14 men were retired. The Saints collected their Last hit on a two-out single from Brian Burgamy in the fifth. A night after hitting a two-run homer in the ninth to give the Saints the lead and the win, he went 2-3 with a double and a run scored extending his hitting streak to seven.
The Saints took a 1-0 lead in the second when Donald Blunt led off with a double. He moved to third on a ground out and scored on a safety squeeze by Trevor Hairgrove.
Sadler showed signs of things to come in the bottom, of the inning when he clubbed his 20th homer of the season, a solo shot to left, tying the game at one.
In the third with Brandon Tripp at first and one out Burgamy doubled to right that put runners at second and third. Joey Becker's single scored both men and gave the Saints a 3-1 lead.
In the fifth Tripp hit an opposite field homer to left, his 19th of the season, to give the Saints a 4-1 lead. It was the 75th RBI of the season for Tripp, leaving him six shy of breaking the single-season Saints record. It was also the 94th homer by the Saints this season leaving them three shy of breaking the single-season franchise record.
The lead didn't last long because in the bottom of the fifth the long ball stung the Saints again. With two outs Saints starter Billy Soule walked Tyler Graham and Amos Ramon. That allowed Yurendell de Caster to hit a three-run homer, his third of the season and second in as many nights, tying the game at four.
The Saints return home for the final three games of the season beginning Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. against the Sioux City Explorers. The Saints send RHP Mark Hamburger (6-7, 3.28) to the mound against Explorers LHP Richard Salazar (9-3, 4.11). The first 1,000 fans in attendance receive a Saints Personal Seat License. The game can be heard on Club 1220 AM and in the ballpark on 87.9 FM.
