
Saltdogs Rally Late in Series Finale

LINCOLN, NE- The Wichita Wingnuts (65-32) lost 6-5 to the Lincoln Saltdogs (49-48) at Haymarket Park on Friday night.
Lincoln rallied for two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to come away with the win. Mike Coles led off with a double and went to third on David Espinosa's single to right-center. After Curt Smith walked, Ian Gac singled home the tying and winning runs on a line drive to left.
Wichita took a 4-0 lead in the top of the first. With the bases loaded and one out, Brent Clevlen hit a groundball to Espinosa at second. Espinosa's flip to Yasel Gomez for an attempted force play was dropped and allowed Ryan Khoury to score the game's first run. Abel Nieves followed with an RBI single through the right side. Two batters later, David Amberson lined a two-run single to right that made it 4-0.
Lincoln chipped away with three runs in the bottom of the second. With first and second and one out, Bryan Pounds hit an RBI, infield single that struck the top of the first base bag. Sean O'Connell's double cut the lead to 4-2 while an RBI single to right from Gomez pulled Lincoln within one run. Wingnuts' starter Chris Smith came back to retire Coles and Espinosa to end the inning with Wichita still in front.
Brian Joynt hit a two-out, RBI single to left in the bottom of the fifth that tied the game.
Cole Armstrong lined a solo home run to right leading off the top of the sixth to give the Wingnuts their second lead of the night.
Josh Dew took the loss in relief for Wichita while Danny Meszaros earned the win for Lincoln.
Smith took a no-decision, allowing four earned runs on nine hits in six innings. Smith walked none and struck out three.
Luis Chirinos started for Lincoln and also took a no-decision. Chirinos allowed five runs, two earned, on eight hits in six innings. Chirinos walked three and struck out one.
Nieves and Armstrong each had two hits for Wichita. Daniel Bennett and Andrew Aizenstadt both worked one scoreless inning in relief of Smith.
The Wingnuts begin their final regular season home series on Saturday night when they host the Kansas City T-Bones at 7:05 p.m. Justin Klipp starts for Wichita.
The 2013 American Association Division Series begins Wednesday, September 4th. The Wingnuts host Game Three of the series on Friday, September 6th as well as the "if necessary" Games Four and Five on September 7th and 8th.
