St. Paul Saints News Release
WINNIPEG, MB - Don't tell the St. Paul Saints they have nothing to play for because ruining their division rivals chance to make the playoffs is incentive enough. Trailing 6-5 in the top of the ninth Brian Burgamy hit a two-run blast and the Saints hung on for a 7-6 win over the Goldeyes at Shaw Park on Thursday night, pushing the Goldeyes 2.5 games behind the Gary SouthShore Railcats in the wild card chase with four games to play.
In the ninth inning Andy Henkemeyer led off with a sinking fly ball single to left-center. On a hit and run Dan Kaczrowski tapped one off the plate that was fielded by the closer Patrick Keating who got the out at first, but Henkemeyer took second. After Brandon Tripp grounded out Burgamy stepped to the plate. The Goldeyes elected to pitch to Burgamy and on a 1-0 pitch he made them pay lining one over the right field wall for his eighth homer in 20 games with the Saints to make it a one run lead.
In the bottom of the ninth Ryan Scoma doubled with one out for the Goldeyes. Ray Sadler flew out to right and Scoma tagged and went to third. After an intentional walk to Mazzola, Casey Haerther came to the plate. He hit a grounder to third baseman Trevor Hairgrove, who took one step back, had the ball pop in and out of his mitt and back in again and he through across the diamond to end the game.
With the Saints trailing 2-1 in the second the bottom of the order came through with five straight hits. Joey Becker led off with a single to right. Donald Blunt moved him to second with a single to left. Chris Manning was asked to sacrifice, but did one better bunting for a base hit to load the bases. A wild pitch tied the game at two. Hairgrove gave the Saints a 3-2 lead with an RBI double and that was followed by an RBI single by Jeremy Mayo to make it 4-2.
With the Saints leading 5-3 in the sixth the Goldeyes took the lead that they would carry to the ninth. Ray Sadler led off with a double. With one out Haerther reached on a fielding error by Becker at short. Luis Allen tied the game with a two-run double and Amos Ramon's RBI double gave the Goldeyes a 6-5 lead.
The Saints pounded out 16 hits with eight of the nine hitters collecting a hit and Henkemeyer, Becker and Blunt all collecting three hits.
The same two teams meet in the finale of the four game series Friday night at 7:00 p.m. at Shaw Park. The Saints send RHP Billy Soule (3-1, 7.79) to the mound against Goldeyes RHP Matt Jackson (3-0, 3.31). The game can be heard on Club 1220 AM.
