Ninth Inning Curve Rally Shocks Baysox

Bowie, Md. - Baysox closer Oliver Drake thought he had ended the top of the ninth inning when he struck out Keon Broxton for the third out. However, Broxton was able to reach base after a wild pitch on the play to extend the inning long enough for the Curve to score three runs and steal a 6-3 win over the Baysox.

The game began after a one hour rain delay and the two teams had battled to a 3-3 stalemate entering the top of the ninth inning. The Baysox best chance to take the lead came in the bottom of the seventh inning when Niuman Romero was thrown out at home trying to score from first base after a double to right field from K.D. Kang.

Unaffected by the long rain delay, Baysox starter Jake Pettit threw eight innings and allowed three runs on four hits while striking out six and walking two in the no decision. Pettit allowed a three-run homer in the first inning and proceeded to throw seven shutout innings, allowing just one hit.

Altoona took an early lead in the top of the first inning against Pettit. Alen Hanson and Drew Maggi reached to open the game with a pair of bunt singles and Stetson Allie then hit a three-run homer to center field with one out to give the Curve a 3-0 lead.

The Baysox came back to tie the game in the bottom of the third inning against Altoona starter Zack Dodson. With one out, Niuman Romero and Christian Walker each walked before Dariel Alvarez hit a three-run homer to center field that tied the game 3-3.

The Curve broke the tie in shocking fashion in the top of the ninth inning against Drake. With two outs, Broxton reached on a strikeout and wild pitch to extend the inning. The next three batters singled and were aided by a Johnny Ruettiger fielding error to give Altoona a 6-3 lead.

Drake pitched the ninth inning and allowed three runs (two earned) on three hits while striking out three in the loss.

Altoona reliever John Holdzkom picked up the win, pitching the final two innings and allowing one hit while striking out three batters.

LHP Eduardo Rodriguez (3-5, 5.15) takes the mound for the Baysox Friday as the Baysox open a three game road series with the Akron RubberDucks. He will be opposed by RHP Joe Colon (8-4, 2.79).

The Baysox are home through Thursday, July 3 for a four-game home series against the Altoona Curve. Promotional Highlights include the Red, White & Boom Independence Day Celebration Thursday, July 3 at 6:35 p.m.
