Sea Dogs Falter in Finale 8-0 to Trenton

Trenton, N.J. - The Portland Sea Dogs (56-29) fell behind in the first and couldn't come back against the Trenton Thunder (40-47), dropping the finale 8-0, Thursday night at Arm & Hammer Park. The Sea Dogs were held to just three hits in the loss, but wrapped up the road trip 6-2 over the eight games.

Mike Augliera took the hill for the Sea Dogs and was roughed up for a trio of runs in the first frame. The righty struck out the first batter he faced in Mason Williams, but Ben Gamel, Tyler Austin, and Peter O'Brien each singled in order to load the bases. On the third hit, Jonathan Roof made a late diving attempt, but couldn't come up with it and had to be removed from the game with a dislocated middle finger.

After the delay caused by the injury, the Thunder continued their rally. Rob Segedin singled home both Gamel and Austin to make it 2-0. Zach Wilson capped off the three-run inning with a single to left, which scored O'Brien and made it 3-0 Trenton.

Portland went quietly in the first, but began a rally in the second against lefty Matt Tracy. Sean Coyle sparked the inning with a leadoff walk, Michael Almanzar was hit by a pitch and Mike Brenly drew a two-out walk to load the bases. After ball four to Brenly, the skies opened up and play came to a halt at 7:35PM

After 55-minutes sailed by, play resumed at 8:30PM and Tracy finished the top of the second with a strikeout to Shannon Wilkerson, which ended the bases loaded threat for Portland. Augliera also resumed his start when the delay lifted and worked around a leadoff double to pitch a scoreless second.

The hometown Thunder went on to double their lead across the next two innings with a run in the third, and a pair in the fourth. O'Brien connected for a one out single and Wilson tripled to score the catcher. In the fourth, Gamel doubled home a pair against the Old Bridge, New Jersey native to make it 6-0 Trenton.

Augliera (3-7) went the first four innings and gave up the six runs, on 11 hits; he didn't walk anyone and struck out five, before giving way to Pete Ruiz. Matt Tracy (8-2) completed five scoreless and allowed just one hit; he hit a batter, walked two, and struck out three.

Ruiz pitched a scoreless fifth and sixth, but was tagged for a two run home run in the seventh off the bat of Segedin, which made it 8-0 Trenton after the seventh. In his first Double-A appearance of the season, the righty went three innings and allowed the two runs on four hits; he added four strikeouts. Jeremy Kehrt made his first appearance for Portland this season and pitched a scoreless eighth.

Cesar Cabral and Tyler Webb combined to throw three scoreless innings for the Thunder and James Pazos took over in the ninth.

Portland attempted to build a rally in the final frame as Peter Hissey reached on an infield single and Blake Swihart reached on a throwing error that put both runners in scoring position with nobody out.

Pazos battled back and struck out Coyle and Almanzar, but walked David Chester to load the bases and end his night. Trenton skipper Tony Franklin dipped into the bullpen once more, and called upon Taylor Garrison to record the 27th and final out. Garrison did just that and struck out Keury De La Cruz and ended the game.

The Sea Dogs return home following the eight-game road trip and get set to open up a three-game, weekend series against the New Britain Rock Cats (Minnesota Affiliate). RHP Mike McCarthy (7-3, 4.75) is scheduled to throw for the Sea Dogs and will be up against LHP Pat Dean (6-3, 4.23) of the Rock Cats.
